A MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH

A MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH
By Kurt Egelhof

GENRE: Adventure
LOGLINE:

A South African love triangle across racial divide-lines, plays out on a mountain sports camp, with deadly consequences and a reunion of a family that may have been lost forever.

SYNOPSIS:

During the dark days of Apartheid in the eighties, Basil (a mixed race man) and Jillian (a white woman), were lover's at university - a relationship doomed from the start. The third party in this relationship, and once best friends, is Robert Smith, a white male who exiled from SA to avoid compulsory military conscription during the mid eighties. Fifteen years later, the three are reunited under extremely tenuous circumstances: Robert and Jill are married, raising their only son, Jerome, who is actually Basil's genetic 'father' from a dangerous liaison they consummated just before she married Robert - with this dark secret living extremely close to the superficial surface that is South Africa's pretence of having dealt with its past.

Basil, Jill, Jerome and Robert face a final confrontation on a utopic cricket sports camp high up in the Hottentot's Holland Mountains - a cricket camp where selection for a berth in the provincial team is in the offing for most of the young boys. Robert, as the camp captain, is accompanied by Jill and Jerome. The elephant in the room, in their lives, is Basil - who teaches, as he has for the last 15 years, cricket strategy to the group of boys for the three week duration of the camp. This is to be the last camp of its kind, since Robert and his cabal of greedy developers, in cahoots with corrupt officials, plan to grab the land from the public terrain and turn it into a private multi-million rand tourism development - with all the associated kickbacks that go with crooked deals. Basil throws a spanner in the works, by rekindling his love for Jill, by admitting that he knew all along that Jerome was his kid. Robert responds by attempting to throw a hypothermic Basil off the edge of a precipice, in a final confrontation. It is only the arrival of Jill and Jerome on the scene at the last minute, that saves Basil from this deadly fate.

Robert is rewarded with a prison sentence for attempted murder, while Basil, Jill and Jerome attempt to start a new life as a family that never was, but should have been. The camp is saved, the future looks bright. As bright as it can be for a mixed race family living in the modern South Africa of today.
