SWEET EVENING BREEZE

SWEET EVENING BREEZE
By Travis Myles

GENRE: Drama, Biography
LOGLINE: James Herndon, known to many as Sweet Evening Breeze, was an African American, gender queer, larger than life character, living their truth for some 90 years mostly in peace in Lexington Kentucky. They spent much of their time in drag, striving to help others and make their community better. Their fantastic story is based on actual events and legends.

SYNOPSIS:

As James Herndon (Sweet Evening Breeze), an African American considered by some to be the originator of the Lexington Kentucky drag scene, spends their last days in a nursing home, they are visited by Dawn, a young African American employee, struggling with their own identity. Over several visits, "Sweets" shares their heralding story starting in turn-of-the-century Lexington Kentucky. After being orphaned at a hospital as a young child, they spent their early life living and working at the hospital, lovingly regarded by those around them. As an adult, they spent their life exploring their gender queer identity, often performing in drag, "holding court" in gay bars, and dressing queerly in everyday life. They were well known for their lavish parties, baked goods, giving to those in need, and getting an archaic and discriminatory law changed. They meet and befriend many quirky characters throughout their long life. With these stories, Dawn learns the importance of and finds the strength to be themselves.
