THE BEAUTY BOYS
By Marcy Schacter

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

Looking to fast track their rock music and acting careers in 1977, Montreal, an uber talented but unscrupulous singer/songwriter lies and cheats to his friends and lovers, creating more chaos and heartbreak than success.

SYNOPSIS:

Rock and roll mania captures the attention of a group of long-time friends living through the phenom of “Star Wars,” “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “The Exorcist.” Imagine Barry Levinson’s boys from "Diner" inhabiting the Jewish and French ghettos of Montreal—and instead of Baltimore boys savouring a last bit of freedom before adult life begins, we have six disparate friends influenced by the antics of a captivating and reckless rocker, Paul Golden. The brains and force behind their band “Snakeskin Sliders,” Paul is willing to risk everything no matter what or whom it costs. They hang hopes on his inspired vision, but quickly discover this golden-tongued rebel employs precarious tactics that result in great turmoil in both love and business.

The conflicting notions of what it takes to become the next “Bowie, “Dunaway” or “Lucas” highlight their struggle to define themselves in this “shape-shifting” landscape. Especially for Lanie Rubin, still reeling from a humiliating blow to her acting career and about to leave her family in Vancouver. Against their advice, she’s intent to pursue studies at one of the top drama schools in Montreal and embark on her journey of self- discovery and independence. Complications ensue when his beautiful, hot-headed girlfriend, Marli befriends Lanie at school. Barely 18, Marli, abandoned by her mom and boyfriend a year ago had Paul take over the management of her self-destructive teenage angst which has taken them on a rocky ride. But the real adventure begins when Paul pursues Lanie who is unaware he’s Marli’s guy. The ensuing romantic escapades put all their friendships on the line- and that line is constantly moving!

Beauty’s Diner is the sacred domain - where great schemes are born and the art of trivial argument and pursuit of the “perfect schtupp” are paramount. After Marli dumps Paul, she convinces Lanie to let him share her friends furnished apartment along with a six-foot Boa snake named Violet. Paul sweeps Lanie into a shaky love triangle with Marli, whose intensifying explorations into the occult, punk rock and amphetamines are like daily Roulette. Mounting complications with school politics and Paul’s ongoing “sexploits” place Lanie in jeopardy of quitting school and abandoning her acting career- which is all she’s ever wanted. After the bands big debut is snowed out - an arson/financing scheme goes up in smoke and Paul’s world starts spinning out of control, he learns is there is no glory without the loyalty, love and respect of friends and Lanie’s surprised to find more fight and strength in her than she ever knew.
