By Tim Myrick

GENRE: Family, Drama
LOGLINE:

A young man grappling with the emotional weight of his father’s murder during a robbery at his grocery store in post-riot Detroit, two years to the day after his militant brother’s bank heist brought shame to the family, seeks closure by investigating how the two crimes are connected.

SYNOPSIS:

In a bustling Detroit neighborhood in 1967, Joseph, a determined father, purchases a grocery store just before the Detroit riot. Miraculously, the store remains untouched through the chaos, becoming a symbol of progress for the family.

Henry, the charismatic and fearless eldest son, grows discontent with the life of a grocer and yearns for something more. His militant drive for social justice and brash nature lead him into a dangerous bank robbery conspiracy, where a failed heist forces him to turn himself in, bringing embarrassment to his family. Meanwhile, Timmy, the innocent and perceptive youngest son, observes the unfolding drama with wide-eyed curiosity. At school, Timmy is teased about Henry's transgressions and ends up in many fights, learning hard lessons about loyalty and resilience.

Their mother, Yvonne, a trailblazer and community leader, balances her many roles with grace and strength. As the first Black person hired by the city of Hamtramck, she is deeply involved in community service, teaching Sunday school, leading Girl Scouts, and serving as the glue that holds the family together.

Rena, the intelligent and empathetic middle child, is caught between her family's expectations and her own aspirations. Close to her older brother Henry, Rena acts as the peacemaker, using her keen insight to navigate the complexities of their relationships.

As the family faces trials and triumphs, another player in the bank robbery conspiracy rises to infamy but remains unproven in court. The family's world is further shattered when, two years to the day of the failed heist, Joseph is brutally murdered in the very store he worked so hard to protect. Just a week later, the same individual linked to the robbery is found dead under suspicious circumstances.

In the face of loss and betrayal, the family's bonds are tested, and they must navigate the complex world of justice and morality. Through the eyes of Henry, Timmy, Yvonne, and Rena, the story explores themes of ambition, family loyalty, and the consequences of one's choices.
