SYNOPSIS:
The On-the-Roof Gang is a true-life, untold World War II espionage action/adventure feature based largely on recently declassified information. After the discovery of Japanese telegraphic communications on the airwaves, the US Navy secretly trained 176 Sailors and Marines how to intercept and exploit these transmissions. These hand-picked radiomen received their training on the roof of the Navy headquarters building in Washington, DC, earning them the nickname, the On-the-Roof Gang. The story follows the youngest of these men, Radioman Third Class Ray RUNDLE, from his training to the intercept site in Hawaii, called Station HYPO. Rundle grapples with unrequited love for his charming friend Bernice. When he and his cousin Louie join the Navy, tragedy strikes at Pearl Harbor, leaving Ray devastated and thirsting for revenge. As a radio intercept operator for the top-secret On-the-Roof Gang, Ray plays a crucial role in decoding intercepted Japanese communications during World War II. His obsession with vengeance leads to further losses, hardening his heart. Amidst the chaos of war, Ray ignores Bernice's affection and focuses solely on defeating Japan. However, through key victories and harrowing experiences, he comes to realize the importance of relationships and eventually reconnects with Bernice, finding hope for a life after war. The screenplay poignantly showcases Ray's journey of growth, love, and the overlooked heroism of the On-the-Roof Gang. Much as Midway is the story of the pilots of the famous naval battle, the On-the-Roof Gang is the story of the US Navy intelligence operators of WW2. Midway meets The Pacific, meets The Imitation Game.
