POET'S CORNER
By Selma Karayalcin

GENRE: Drama, Crime
LOGLINE: In early ‘80s London, a precocious girl and her sister, steal drugs from Jamaican dealers to pay their mother’s debt to violent gangsters -- with catastrophic consequences.

SYNOPSIS:

“Poet’s Corner” is loosely based on events which occurred during a period of my childhood. I wrote it as a tribute to my mother who passed away last year and to my sister who died fifteen years previous to that.

It’s a coming of age drama, and a crime drama with comedy, from little Selma’s perspective chronicling life after her parents’ divorce: it’s about a thirteen-year-old breaking bad.

What drives the story forward is the obsession Selma and her sister have with Hollywood film: it becomes the lens through which they view their world. Ultimately, it protects them, it is, you could say, a survival mechanism for the children, and it also becomes a means to preserve their innocence in the brutal world they find themselves in.
