On the one-year anniversary of his mother’s death, a self-absorbed banker pays an unannounced visit to his estranged and troubled father in a final attempt at reconciliation.

SYNOPSIS:

Workaholic Pete Wallace has little time for his family, although he manages to make it to the golf course a few times a week. On the one-year anniversary of his mother’s death, his wife persuades him to visit his estranged dad, Henry, for a father-son day. As they have done throughout their lives, Pete and Henry bang heads and the morning ends with Pete’s abrupt departure. At his mother’s grave, Pete declares he won’t be coming back, his tumultuous relationship with his ornery dad too strained to repair. Pete, though, reluctantly returns to Henry’s house after he realizes he previously dropped his sunglasses, and his family-driven wife encourages him to give reconciliation one more attempt.

The pair finds temporary middle ground in an outdoor chore. Soon thereafter, Pete begins to see signs of Henry’s daily struggles, handicapped by his constant drinking. They accept an invitation from family friends to an evening of cards, which ends with Henry exploding and racing away in his car with a bewildered Pete in tow. Pistol in hand, Henry spends the night on high alert and blasts a hole in the kitchen floor in the morning. When the police arrive, an officer discloses to Pete a number of recent run-ins at the residence, the conversation ending with the veteran cop saying he doesn’t think Henry should be living alone.

After a tension-filled afternoon, highlighted by Henry berating an Urgent Care doctor, Pete works toward a compromise and offers to make dinner. Pete learns more about his distant father - a former high school baseball pitching phenom, ambulance driver, and Silver Star recipient - than he ever knew. The narrative and meal, though, end when both men erupt and retreat. Pete looks to make amends after a flashback reveals he is just like his rogue father, but Henry has retired for the evening. Henry then spends the next two days in bed, bringing the scope of his depression and PTSD into full view. Moments after a tame Henry divulges a number of family secrets, he suffers a heart attack. Pete vows to shift his priorities toward family and help his dad in recovery.
