The theme is the classic fight between science and faith condensed into a talented geneticist with a past in an orphanage, committed to research for a cure for significant diseases. Due to her deep faith and spirituality, she is concerned that her research about modifying the DNA might be a sin.
What would happen if a satanic sept is interested in her studies for some obscure purpose, but is willing to fund the research? Would the protagonist be willing to exploit the situation by giving up her ideals?
