THE BOOK OF ABEL

THE BOOK OF ABEL
By Daphne Russell

GENRE: Drama, Biography
LOGLINE:

What if the most radical thing a teacher ever did...was hold up a mirror?

SYNOPSIS:

The Book of Abel is The Matrix meets Freedom Writers—a quietly radical story about waking up inside a system that was never built for you. Like The Matrix, it’s about seeing the illusion for what it is. Like Freedom Writers, it’s about one teacher’s refusal to give up on students society has already counted out. The title refers to a central student, Abel—a sharp but disconnected senior whose inability to read is less about skill and more about survival. When he carves a racial slur into his desk, Naomi Campbell, a seasoned but subdued teacher, gives him an ultimatum: Read this book—or you don’t graduate. The book? A banned novel that mirrors his rage, his confusion, and his potential. As Abel starts to read, something shifts—and as other students begin to follow, Naomi finds herself caught between a district that demands compliance and a classroom awakening to its own power. At its core, The Book of Abel explores what happens when young people are finally given access to stories that reflect who they are—and the courage to rewrite who they might become. Naomi’s own relationship to books is shaped by a former student who turned to crime when he couldn't access school on school's terms. Every book she offers now is a letter to someone she couldn’t reach. As students’ belief systems begin to unravel, the school—and the community—start to push back. The question becomes: can one classroom stay awake inside a system designed to keep them asleep?
