What if the most radical thing a teacher ever did...was hold up a mirror?
SYNOPSIS:
When a loud, angry high school student named Abel enters a classroom led by Naomi—an experienced and controversial English teacher with an unconventional approach—neither expects to change the other. But as Naomi encourages her students to reflect on their own stories through books that speak to their lived experiences, Abel begins to unravel the anger he’s been carrying. As protests over banned books erupt outside the school, tensions rise inside as well, forcing both student and teacher to confront the systems that have silenced them.
The Book of Abel is a deeply introspective coming-of-age drama that explores literacy as liberation, and the transformative power of being seen. Through the evolving relationship between teacher and student, the film asks what happens when we stop trying to fix broken kids—and instead, let them speak.
