One exterminator wants to poison every pest in sight; the other wants to heal them with a mandolin.
But after their partnership implodes, they'll have to settle their differences in a bizarre extermination contest against legendary pests, corporate goons, and their own terrible instincts
SYNOPSIS:
For the Bug Buddies pest control duo, every day is a test of patience. Nick Beef is a schlubby, walking health code violation whose primary solution to any problem is to douse it in poison. His partner, Pete Wenzel, is an immaculate idealist who believes the key to pest control lies not in chemicals, but in the soothing melodies of his grandfather’s mandolin. Their partnership exists in a fragile state of codependence, held together by Beef’s need for routine and Wenzel’s apparent inability to do anything else.
This delicate balance shatters on “Bat Day,” the one day a year they perform a free, high-profile job that brings in all their business. Thanks to the well-plotted machinations of Wes Bradley, a moderately wealthy businessman and bug hunter, a misunderstanding involving a supposedly rabid bat and accusations of incompetence boils over. When Wenzel commits the ultimate sin by calling Beef the one thing he loathes more than hippies — a pest — Beef dramatically quits the team for good.
Thus begins the great exterminator turf war. Wenzel, aided by his perpetually unimpressed goth niece, Patience, starts Bug Harmony, a holistic venture promising to heal pests and clients alike, gluten-free. Incensed and betrayed, Beef, with the help of his agoraphobic nephew Elmer , counters with Bug Smashers, a bombastic, unapologetically violent service for people who believe in killing pests dead. Adding to the chaos is Bradley’s Bugs, staffed by Bradley’s idiot henchmen, who would much rather party than put down pests.
The rivalry comes to a head in a surreal magic restaurant, where Bradley, fed up with the tomfoolery, challenges both teams to a final, winner-take-all Pest Off. The targets are no ordinary vermin, but three of the Legendary Pests of Champaign Urbana. Pushed to their absolute limits, Beef and Wenzel are forced to confront the truth: as dysfunctional as they were together, they’re even more miserable apart. But has the realization come too late? Or will they be able to put the past behind them and overcome the biggest pest of their careers? I mean, what do you think?
