SYNOPSIS:
In a small town in Italy, in the late 19th century, lives Jack. The handsome, cunning bastard son of a Baron, Jack is great at hunting rabbits and breaking hearts, as evidence by his affair Angelina, who loves him. But there are two big problems: Angelina is married to the local crime boss and Jack is engaged to Celeste.
Jack’s overbearing aunt Maria scolds him for being lazy as he skins the rabbits he caught. But jack enjoys spending time with his uncle Niccolo, the "philosopher." Niccolo thinks Jack’s affair with Angelina is dangerous, and he should court Celeste instead. Jack tells Angelina that they need to break up, but Angelina keeps insisting that Jack stay a bit longer, and they make love “one last time.” Angelina’s husband Paolo catches them in the act, and in the scuffle, Jack ends up killing Paolo. Horrified by her husband’s death, Angelina kills herself. As Jack goes on the run, Paolo’s family attacks and kill Jack’s family. Jack comes home to a slaughter, with only Niccolo being left alive. Niccolo tells Jack that all are dead and convinces him that they should escape to America, where they won’t be found. Jack agrees and they make their way to St Louis.
Unknown to Niccolo, Celeste is not dead, but captive. Benito, Paolo’s brother, vows to find Jack in America and make him pay.
Jack and Niccolo make it to America. Jack does well as a fur trader. However, Niccolo drags him behind with his dangerous gambling addiction. A bunch of rough men force Jack to pay for Niccolo’s cheating. Later, they ambush Jack and Niccolo, but Jack kills them instead, and they’re forced to run away again. Niccolo sees how their differences are a burden to Jack, and rather than drag him to another city, they part ways; Jack to the wilderness—Niccolo to New Orleans.
Meanwhile, Benito has become quite a crime lord in New Orleans. A madam named Maggie help him kill a competitor and take over his business. Maggie tells Benito that she’ll turn Celeste into the perfect whore.
Jack ends up working for the railroad and befriends a man named Jacob and falls in love with his sister Maya. An assassin tries to ambush Jack and gets shot instead—Mia saves Jack’s life. It turns out that the kid was sent by Benito, and Jack recoils at the fact that vengeance has followed him to America. Jack makes love to Maya, but he leaves her the next day to take care of his unfinished business with Benito.
Meanwhile, Celeste has a wealthy benefactor, an old rich man named Christian, who dies and leaves her a piece of property. Celeste decides to use it as a shelter for the women battered by Benito. Benito hates that she’s become independent and strong, but Maggie takes her side.
Jack arrives in New Orleans and finds Niccolo, who confesses that he was the one who ratted him out, but Jack forgives him. Jack comes to Celeste to save her, but she doesn’t need or want his help. Benito’s men make a move against Jack, but he kills them all. Finally, all that’s left is Benito. Jack challenges him to a duel and at the end of that brutal fight, Jack kills him.
In the end, Jack rides back north to find Maya, and the little piece of the world where he finally belongs
