A starry-eyed nerd, a quick tempered bombshell, an even-keeled church girl, an audible deer, and a flamboyant outsider experience their first homecoming dance; where someone's coming out shifts the course of their lives and destroys the mythology built around their hometown.
SYNOPSIS:
Honeysuckle Tea is an hour-long dramatic comedy with Sci-fi elements taking place in a seemingly inconspicuous Southern U.S. suburban high school idyllic as a John Hughes movie but sinister as American history. The show is character driven along the same lines as Atlanta, a bildungsroman as absurd as FoolyCooly, and thematically pertinent to teenage life as Euphoria.Statues are erected to solidify the mythology of “American values” standing in as fragile frameworks of suburban bliss blanketing wider issues surrounding education, student mental development, racial equity, student sexuality, and how those crises coop themselves to the outdated model of public education. Honeysuckle Tea explores the American dream in action fully encapsulating the journey of outsiders trapped in places that believe giving teachers guns rather than getting rid of them saves lives: a story that follows characters trapped in places seeking to erase them and adorn the truth with lies, depicting their attempts to assert their own reality.Nary Millbrue, a small town devoutely dedicated to the upholding of traditional values, has had its school districts forcibly restructured to further integrate the student body. Leading to the entrance of many minority students to predominantly white and heteronormative spaces.Amidst those spaces, created to educate high schoolers on how to function within the wider-world, CHANCE is outed as gay man during the Homecoming the subsequently outs himself, BERENICE is outraged after being the only black student inducted into a school wide honor society, DAWN is overwhelmed by consistent demands of her to behave as a lady causing her to act out, ASHER is overlooked when creating a new club to help with transfer students transition influencing a social media campaign to fight against this discrimination, and EVE is an audible deer who is trying to recover her memories. Each story ignites like a chain reaction from different angles: the point of view of each story is influenced by the character guiding the narrative.Honeysuckle Tea seeks to confront contemporary teenagers Chance, Dawn, Berenice, Asher, and Eve with the fables of an Old Southern high school’s glory through unnatural circumstances and Lynch-esque cinematic adventures. Narratives exploring characters modeling themselves into adults and discovering the hometown they inhabit has a long history of racial inequality now manifesting in a new form of assimilationist tactics that prompted the integration of the Daniel H. Hill high school at the beginning of the series, the group begins having secret club meetings (in Asher’s club) that investigate the larger reasons for the restructuring of the school districts and the plot to brainwash marginalized students into subservient positions within society. The club must work to reveal the actions of the school and the looming agenda of a secret society pulling the strings through supernatural means.
