Two girls (twins separated at birth by adoption) because one is “perfect” and one is blind grow up not knowing each other, but both are very musically talented. The perfect one becomes a famous pop singer, managed by her overbearing, demanding & controlling father, while the blind one lives a quiet life, until their paths cross.
SYNOPSIS:
The “perfect one”, Christina is managed by her overbearing & demanding father, who tells her what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. VERY CONTROLLING. She hits fame--then has an incident with her dad, where he verbally and physically abuses her. She loses her confidence and starts falling fast and hard in her fame & popularity.
The other twin, Grace, her blind sister, was adopted as an infant, and raised by a kind and loving family. Modest financially, but rich with love, they care for her, send her to a reputable school for the blind and nurture her musical talents as a writer, composer, and even an excellent singer of simple songs used in plays. She enjoys her life and everyone loves her and and her easy going personality.
As young adults (early 20's), the perfect one has had a quick rise to fame, popularity, and a taste of wealth. Her manager/father is getting used to this wealth and fame, and wants more. He is working her hard, putting an enormous amount of pressure on her to go even higher with the fame and wealth. She has some top pop songs and a loyal fan base, but she is no longer enjoying what she's doing--even starting to dread the grueling schedule and high pressure her father is putting on her, and it shows in her performances.
The breaking point for her comes, one night, when she struggles at a live concert, and her father blows up on her. After the concert, he humiliates her, verbally chastises her, and even hits her in his frustration. He has always been protective of her, kept her in "his" crowd of people (white, affluent, stuffy, and conceited but connected to the right people to help her in the music industry.) Up until now, his methods have helped her achieve success.
She has boiled over.....
She runs from the concert hall--back to her hotel. She changes into old jeans, baseball hat, so as not to draw attention to herself and goes out to the streets of New Orleans to clear her head and walk around. She gets a hot dog and coke from a street vendor, something her dad would never allow. She starts to relax, taking in the sights, smells , and sounds. She stops to watch street performers and 1 man bands on the street trying to earn a few bucks from the tourists.
In the distance, she hears a drum beat like she has never heard before. She begins to walk toward the sounds of the drum, and then it turns into rhythmic piano playing. As she gets closer, she sees a big crowd around whoever is performing. She moves through the crowd to get a better view and finally sees what's happening. There is a strikingly good looking young black man playing the piano like she has never seen. He makes it look easy, but it sounds like Beethoven R&B--it's fantastic sounding. After 2 minutes on the piano, he sprints back to the drums and starts the same beat/rhythm on the drums as he was playing on the piano.. The crowd loves it, and they show their appreciation by throwing dollar bills into a large bucket being guarded by another young black man that appears to be his brother. She watches in awe as his performance goes for another 20 minutes and raises the crowd to a fever pitch of excitement, and finally ends.
The crowd begins to disperse, and the young musician starts packing up, and his brother starts counting the money in the bucket. She slowly walks up and drops a $20 bill in his bucket. He looks up, says thank you and smiles the most genuine smile she has ever seen. She says to him, "Wow, that was fantastic....you are really really good--like sooo good." He laughs politely and says "Well, thank you very much...and thanks again for the tip. She wants to keep talking to him so she says," Well, I have been around music a long time, and I'm being serious when I tell you how good you are. You should be playing on the big circuit--believe me I know (she doesn't want to tip him off who she is). He says, "You sound like you may have some connections?" ...asking, more than commenting. "I may have a few" (coy smile). "Well the last time I checked,, the big time isn't looking for young brothah street performers." She says to him "Want to go for a walk--maybe grab a beer?" He says, "Are you hitting on me?" There is great chemistry between them and they are both guarded with each other but attracted at the same time.
His brother says, "Yo, Ty, I'll see you back at the apartment." "Ty, huh.....I'm Christina--Is that your brother?" "Yeah, my younger brother--I take care of him since.....(fade off). "Since what?......I'm sorry I don't mean to pry." "No its OK. My parents were killed.....killed in a robbery gone wrong when we lived in Detroit. After that, I brought my brother out here cause I heard people like me could make a living playing on the streets." They go on walking and talking for hours--mostly her learning about him. Every time he asks about her, she short answers him and changes topic. They end up at a jazz bar where they order some drinks and continue to talk for a few hours. The night ends with her giving him her cell # and promising to get together soon.
He automatically assumes she's playing him and giving him a fake number...so he says, "You know where to find me now----you know where I work!.”
Of course, her phone (which was off) has been loaded up with messages from her dad and some caring staff members.
Her name is Grace.
She is sweet, caring, loved by everyone who knows her...and she is completely blind. She now works/helps out at the blind school that she attended as a child. She teaches, works with the new students who are struggling to adapt to their new world of blindness. She is the best at helping them transition to this major change of life and dealing with their emotions, frustrations and bitterness. She is a counselor, psychologist, teacher, and friend. She is very easy to talk to talk to and empathizes perfectly with the students she works with. They immediately connect to her.
Christina and her relationship with Ty develops quickly, with more walks and talks. He brings out a side of her she has never known. He challenges her, questions her, tells her to follow her musical instincts--not her father’s. With a lot of conflict, she faces her father and tells him he’s fired, and she is going to go in her own direction. He threatens her, tells her she will fail, and even that he will see her in court. In his emotional breakdown, he then tells her, “I should have kept your sister and given YOU away.” Christina stops, says “What did you say?” Her dad says, “You heard me….. I gave away your twin sister--and it should have been you. Her hearts skips a beat as she realizes what is happening. She always had a sense she was part of someone else. She now makes it her mission to find her.
The story goes in another direction as Christina begins to manage her own career, and with Ty in her band, takes on a more R&B vibe, and her popularity grows. At the same time she discovers where her sister is and goes to the blind school to “meet” her. There is an instant connection and they both feel it.
