A suicidal girl makes a deal with a taxi driver: she gives him one night to prove to her that life is still worth living, which winds up taking them on a series of adventures that will ultimately change both their lives forever.
SYNOPSIS:
Kathy is a teen who wants to kill herself. She gets in a taxi cab hoping to be driven somewhere where she can end it all, but the driver Allan quickly deduces Kathy’s problem. He makes her a deal: she gives him one night to convince her not to kill herself.
To help them do this, they make two lists: one of reasons why Kathy wants to kill herself and one of things she would want to do if it was her last night on Earth. To cross off the first item (Have frozen yogurt one last time), Allan’s solution involves breaking the law which attracts two police officers to start looking for the two of them.
Over the course of the rest of the night, Kathy and Allan cross off the items on both lists one by one. Kathy gets her first kiss from her crush from school, a friend of Allan’s helps give her solutions to keep from failing a class at school, and so on. All the while, the two cops are still searching for them.
Finally, they arrive at the last thing on the list of reasons why Kathy wants to kill herself: her dad is refusing to pay for her college. Allan’s solution is to intimidate Kathy’s father with a gun to get him to agree to pay. Because he went too far with this, Kathy starts freaking out and runs away to go jump off a parking garage. Fortunately, the two cops are there, as they’re still on Kathy and Allan’s trail, and they manage to get Kathy down from the ledge.
Allan arrives back at the scene, having heard about Kathy by listening to the news on the radio. He manages to convince the cops to let Kathy go with him because even though the cops can tell Allan is the cab driver they’ve been after all night, they can see that he was just trying to help Kathy. Allan then takes Kathy to an old friend of his: a priest who was responsible for preventing Allan from killing himself years ago.
The priest tells Kathy that problems with suicide cannot be solved in just one night. It takes time and effort, but it’s all worth it if it keeps her from killing herself. This makes Kathy feel better and helps her to decide to not kill herself. 15 years later, Kathy is living a happy, healthy life. She’s happily married with a fulfilling job helping teens who struggle with the same problems she did. She then meets up with Allan who she is still friends with and the two of them go out to celebrate the anniversary of the night that changed both of their lives for the better.
