By Eric Walker

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense
LOGLINE:

"After a brutal murder mimics the decades-old ritualistic killing of a young mother, the rookie detective assigned to the case must navigate through her tortured past to confront the manipulative killer."

SYNOPSIS:

"Getting Colder" is a new age crime thriller set against the backdrop of snow covered peaks in the Northern Arizona town of Flagstaff. It is the story of a young Hispanic female detective assigned to a copycat murder that mimics every aspect of the unsolved killing of a young mother, twenty years earlier.

Angelina Reyes is the rookie detective that must navigate through decades of cover ups and lies while trying to piece together what really happened from the retired detective that failed to solve the first murder. Her relentless attention to detail and singular focused drive have earned her a promotion and a reputation as an outsider in the department.

Bill Hanlan is the retired detective that not only failed to solve this murder due to his alcoholism, but has never quite recovered from his twenty five lackluster years on the force or the untimely death of his wife.

Mitch Aguilar is the experienced Detective assigned to keep an eye on Angelina. He has found himself enamored by her, even though she doesn't return the affection. Angelina has issues with letting people get too close to her. At least emotionally.

Mentored by her family friend, Captain Max Rafferty, she must embark on a journey of self discovery as she unravels the mysteries that tie these two cases together. Tortured daily by her own demons of self doubt and a childhood filled with abuse and abandonment, she must face her greatest fears as she gets closer to the truth.

As Bill and Angelina work together they begin to suspect that Captain Rafferty is the killer from the original murder in 1999, even though they can't prove it. It was his first kill and one of passion. It was fueled by his aversion to drug dealers who took away someone very special in his life. He has vowed to rid the world, or at least his small part of it, of the scum that threaten the very fabric of our society. Over the last twenty years he has kidnapped, tortured and killed numerous criminals. They were never heard from again. His standing within the Police Department has afforded him the intel and the opportunity to facilitate his passion.

As they dig deeper into the past, Bill realizes that Rafferty sabotaged his case from the beginning. He turned him into internal affairs for his drinking on duty and tampered with evidence to throw Bill off the identity of the real killer. Bill reaches a turning point in the story where he stops feeling sorry for himself, stops drinking and starts to turn things around.

They begin to gather more and more evidence to build a case against the Captain. Angelina and Bill both struggle with their past and continue to self sabotage along the the way. Angelina with her underground, subversive life and Bill with his addiction and self loathing. Together, they start to rely on each other to make it through their respective journeys that while different, often mirror the other.

As the plot plays out, Rafferty begins to leave clues as if he is almost taunting Bill. Mitch volunteers to help to the protest of Angelina. Together, the three of them start to slip the noose tighter on Rafferty's agenda. Neither Bill nor Mitch suspect that Angelina is actually aligned with Rafferty and luring them into a trap.

In an attempt to confront Captain Rafferty, a chase ensues and a gun battle breaks out between Bill and Rafferty. Angelina is caught in the crossfire as Mitch sacrifices himself to save her life. From that point on Angelina begins to struggle with her sense of morality and her involvement with Rafferty. At the end of Act 2 it is revealed to the audience that Angelina is being groomed by Rafferty to take the mantle of vigilante when he retires and that she is in fact the killer of the woman in copycat murder. Assigned by her mentor to investigate a case where she is the actual suspect.

Bill remains ignorant of this fact until the finale where he and Angelina confront Rafferty in his mountain hideout. Angelina must face her fear of Rafferty and confront the years of manipulation by him against her. In the end, her struggle with morality and doing the right thing wins out as she saves Bill's life and stops the murderous rampage of her mentor and emotional captor.

This sure is a great and unique story about betrayals, double-crosses, and deceits, but the synopsis needs some work. See my comments in your forum topic about the logline, which could better describe (at least to me) the story, and which is why I rated your current logline lower than I would rate the premise and synopsis. Best fortunes in your creative endeavors, Eric!
