Logline:
Unbeknownst to the guests at The Highland's Ivy Hotel in NYC, Mr. Red the bellhop is a strange and dangerous creature from the old world and he has a need for human blood.
Introduction:
I have a background in Anthropology and I have always been fascinated by the diversity of culture and the myths & legends that drives them. Mr. Red is the protagonist in this Feature Length horror who is living and working in New York City as a bell hop with a secret. Mr. Red is a goblin, notoriously known as a ‘Red Cap’ from the old times of Scotland.
A fiendish creature believed to have lived in abandoned castles, stalking travelers and the lost. Hunting them down with his spear and dipping his hat in the victim’s blood to refresh its red color. My story is an American twist, combined with growing madness and gore.
Story:
The scene opens with Mr. Red acting on his ritualistic nature of bathing his clothes in thick, red blood in his bathroom sink. After wringing his clothes, he reveals one of his male victims hanging upside in his tub. Moving onto his bedroom, he then puts on a literal face mask of the victim and slowly steps into a coffin like unit filled with blood to sleep in.
The following morning, The Highland’s Ivy Hotel begins its daily routine and we find that Mr. Red works as a bellhop assisting a guest at the lobby and later into their room. It is here, that we notice that Mr. Red is in a familiar and constant cycle of the service industry; no growth, same speech of information about the hotel and lousy tips.
In between his duties and breaks, Mr. Red has these odd moments showing his true nature. From sniffing doors of possible new victims to noticeable red stains on his clothes that he tries to pass off as ketchup. It is not until he takes notice of a male housekeeper (Juan) that he finds intriguing to stalk but is constantly interrupted by his co-worker, Dave; who keeps reminding him of an upcoming bachelor party of another employee.
Mr. Red is later instructed to assist a misogynist guest up to his room, Mr. Rick Gallow. An older man looking for cold booze and hot times with fast women during his trip. However, Mr. Red’s world soon takes a turn for the strange when he is told that a famous musician is expected to check in at the hotel.
Afterwards, he goes home to his sad apartment to drink, watch porn and pass out. But during his dream and future ones, we see glimpses of his real physical likeness eating someone in the hills of Scotland and other scenes of his past victims. His current dream is interrupted by a gang feud taking place outside, which leaves one dead. Mr. Red later retrieves the body for his bloody ritual.
The musician guest finally arrives at the hotel and Mr. Red is suddenly curious by her presence since she smells of something that is not human. It turns out, she is the famous violinist, Jo[i]. After they both eventually find out each other’s secret, they have sex and Mr. Red is later invited to one of her shows. But with no tux on standby, Mr. Red hunts down a couple in the city coming from a social event, kills them and steals the man’s clothes.
Obligated to go to a bachelor party, Mr. Red finds himself at a strip club. He is later thrown out of the club, after a stripper catches a glimpse of his monstrous hands in the reflection of a private, mirrored room. He then has a break down in an alley.
Finding out the next day that Jo is doing her final performance, he decides to attend with hopes of making something more of their strange relationship. Unfortunately, after meeting with Jo following the show, his offer is turned down. Mr. Red then runs into Mr. Gallow and his escort in the theater lobby and is talked into joining them back at the hotel for booze and sex.
Finishing a threesome, Mr. Red attempts numerous times to leave but is hassled on by Mr. Gallow to stay and party more. After receiving continuous insults on his masculinity, Mr. Red snaps and kills Mr. Gallow and the prostitute. Now stuck with two dead bodies to get rid of at the hotel that he works in, his stress explodes himself into a delusional state of a dueling personality. Talking to his confident self or conscience, he is guided on how to escape from his close self-sabotage by causing a fire. Afterword, the police investigation concluded the deaths of Mr. Gallow and his date accidental, but the event did cost him his employment.
Later at a bar, Mr. Red catches sight of the housekeeper Juan and follows him to a gay bar. Seducing him, he invites Juan over to his apartment where he later plunges a spear into his neck and revels in his usual blood soaking ritual.
Feeling hopeless again about his life, Mr. Red takes a walk and finds inspiration from a shop selling international tours. Deciding on some destinations, he celebrates with some ice cream at a park. There he begins a conversation with his dueling personality on why he needs a change.
Satisfied with his decision and possibilities for the future, he begins his way back to the apartment. Suddenly he is attacked by two gang members wanting to kill and rob him. During the struggle and beating, Mr. Red’s scalp and facial skin is pulled and ripped to reveal his true evil face. A monster with pale, wrinkly skin and long white hair. The attackers run off in fear after shooting Mr. Red to death. Moments later, Mr. Red comes back to life.
THE END.
[i] Jo is the protagonist from my screenplay, “Jo”. A half woman half spider demon from the Japanese myth, Jorogumo.
