STORYTIME
By Cynthia Garbutt

GENRE: Animation
LOGLINE:

(30-minute procedural, children's series, animated/live-action. Timeline: present, historical, and various. Pilot completed).

Series Logline: Four animated and adventurous preschoolers turn this weekly routine bore into an adventure of historical and scientific discovery, by time traveling and visiting other dimensions with the aid of a portal (the lift) and their individual superpowers in live-action.

SYNOPSIS:

Once a week, ho-hum librarian Louis, who's severely short on storytelling skills; conducts Children’s Storytime Hour of classic nursery rhymes, sing-a-longs, and books, in the cramped children’s section of the library at the local community center. Dev, Juno, Li, and Ola, not your typical 3-year-olds (that so happen are always parked next to each other), complain to each other about the stereotypical narratives, Louis’ lacklustre delivery, and sense an air of disingenuousness and condescension in his tone. So, they secretly cohort together (whilst the programme is going on), and quietly discuss how pointless and boring storytime is. And surmise that there’s more to these tales than meets the ear. So, after Louis announces the featured children’s story of the day and during the excitement and cheering of the rest of the easily amused kids, they escape and explore the library. Sneaking away as a clandestine A-team, to find books and go online. They’re met by their guide who shows them the portal (the lift) that will allow them to time travel and personally investigate the hidden: historical, social, and political meanings behind these children’s favourites. All along, their parents are mildly entertained and politely endure the entire session, so the Superpower Tots escape, is unbeknownst to them. After their storytime break-out, they return just as the “happy ever after” is read. Their parents are busy, chatting away, so the innocent and seemingly naive little youngsters, go unnoticed as they get back into their buggies, pretending they’ve been amused by the programme. And their parents are none the wiser about their whereabouts or their weekly mission and escapades.

Pilot subtitle: The Portal

Pilot Logline: Ola, Dev, Li, and Juno are on a fact-finding mission about the basis of the stories they've been force-fed. They leave the confinement of their prams, covertly roam the library, meet-up with their guide that directs them to the portal (the lift), the barrier between fairytales and enlightenment.
