D-I-Y OR D-I-WO
By Cynthia Garbutt

GENRE: Comedy, Romance
LOGLINE:

A jaded and frustrated, mid-life romantic, passionately pursues a woman that challenges his view of femininity.

SYNOPSIS:

The money is spent, the spend drift, interior designer ex-wife is off-grid, and the contractor split. The kitchen re-do is undone for his upcoming pretentious "surprise" 50th birthday party, so a frustrated man walks into a D-I-Y store and leaves with more than he bargained for.

Pip, an uber-cool, long-time separated but finally divorced, photojournalist and in-demand celebrity photographer, is broke. After a non-contested 50/50 split and buying out his ex, to keep their luxury warehouse conversion loft that he wouldn't dare part with. He returns from southeast Asia after five weeks for a grueling nature shoot and finds that the lavish and unnecessary kitchen re-do is still not finished (as was promised by his ex). And one of her favourite event planners informs him, because she's incommunicado, that she's long-planned, a surprise birthday bash for him. Since they married and moved in, the penthouse condo has been used by her as a designer showcase to impress potential clients, to keep in competition with her frenemies and colleagues. And, the appearance that their marriage is filled with one big party after another has ended. When nothing could be further from reality. Pip has withstood her decorating whims and extravagant furniture acquisitions. But this time the "heart of the home," the kitchen, has been totally gutted. It wouldn't matter to most, but Pip loves to cook. So, having the kitchen not functioning and things in complete disarray, is his tipping point. Besides, the fact that she only hung around till the demolition started, then took a hike on a journey of self-discovery to an undisclosed location. And the kleptomaniac contractor took a hike after he discovered to his delight, that she left behind her very expensive and rare-jeweled engagement ring. A gift to her, seven years ago when Pip was in love, hopeful and optimistic. But, looking back he realises there were red flags from the start. The party planner informs him that since the shindig has all the perks (including live performance artists) and is only two weeks away, so a 100% refund is out of the question. And if one of the acts are whacked he, not Pip, will be the brunt of their vindictive retaliation. So, Pip has no choice but to either, let the money that's already spent, go down the drain. Or, find a reliable contractor to finish the renovation and installation within two weeks and celebrate his 50th-year mid-life crisis.
