An idealistic young man dedicated to the example of Cleveland-born President James A. Garfield runs a scrappy campaign for Congress out of his self-started brewery.
SYNOPSIS:
Having spent all of his savings in starting a brewery in Cleveland, OH with his brother Eric and roommate Chris, our protagonist John Newbecker finds himself without the safety of his plastics sales job that he was counting on keeping until the brewery was up and running due to not joining a country club at the request of his boss (and also not thinking about putting 20 minutes a day).
With this, John and his roommates have little room for failure as the brewery opens. The brewery is named after John's idol, President James A. Garfield, who had political courage and always put public interest over politics. John’s mentor, William, is the curator of the James Garfield Memorial, where John often stops in for encouragement and lessons on the life of this president. William sees something in John that reminds him of Garfield and takes him under his wing, trying to help him reach his potential.
John sees political courage is needed now more than ever, especially with the local Congressman, Conor McLaughlin, who represents everything James Garfield fought against. McLaughlin has been in Congress almost 20 years and only cares about lowering taxes and staying in office, playing it safe at every turn.
As John considers running for office, he meets Ashley, a friend of Eric's girlfriend who has experience in campaigns. She sees John's desire to change things and offers encouragement. As the two get to know each other, John feels she could finally be the partner he has been looking for while Ashley is reluctant to get into a relationship after a bad break-up.
Conor appears at the opening of the brewery for the free press and he and John get into a sparring debate with John getting the upper hand. John seizes the moment and announces he is running for Congress against Conor.
As the campaign gets underway, Conor is caught up in a scandal which suddenly puts John in contention. But with this newfound break comes increased pressure with attacks on both John and the brewery. As the walls cave in and John begins to buckle, he finds comfort and encouragement from none other than James A. Garfield himself, inspiring John to finish the campaign staying true to his beliefs.
All of this moves toward a climatic election night. Will John win the election, get the girl, save the brewery from impending financial pressures and live up to the legacy of the one who inspired him to get in this race from the beginning?
