NON-RASTA
By Tshepiso Mahlangu

GENRE: Comedy
LOGLINE:

A satirical comedy-drama that follows the life of a Rastafari family in South Africa, navigating the contradictions of a modern society that claims to respect their beliefs while simultaneously misunderstanding or marginalizing them. Through humour and heart, the series unpacks the challenges of identity, culture, and belonging.

SYNOPSIS:

In the vibrant streets of Cape Town, Non-Rasta follows the life of Zion "Zee" Maseko, a laid-back Rastafarian café owner, as he balances his deep-rooted cultural and spiritual beliefs with the rapidly changing, often superficial modern world. With a heart full of peace, wisdom, and a touch of humour, Zee navigates the challenges that come with being a devout Rastafarian in a society that often misunderstands, mislabels, or appropriates his way of life.

Alongside Zee is his outspoken mother, Mama Jahdeh, a respected healer who represents the old ways of Rastafari tradition; his younger brother Mandla, a rebellious aspiring rapper torn between faith and fame; and Thando, his smart and independent girlfriend who is constantly trying to understand the Rasta lifestyle without fully committing to it herself. Zee also seeks guidance from Baba Nathi, the eccentric elder of their community whose advice is as cryptic as it is profound.

The show mixes humour and heart to tackle serious issues such as cultural stereotyping, identity, and modern relationships, all while poking fun at the missteps and contradictions of modern society. Through hilarious misunderstandings, unexpected cultural clashes, and the everyday hustle of city life, Non-Rasta delivers a heartfelt and humorous portrayal of faith, family, and staying true to oneself in a world full of noise.
