SYNOPSIS:
In 2015, former high school sweethearts, DAMIEN ROWE, and SAM MOORE are discussing what they want from life. After a short montage where Damien narrates his childhood, it’s revealed he suffers from CHRONIC DEPRESSION.
In 1998, we see Damien and Sam in high school. Although in love, Sam reveals that she is breaking up with him to pursue an indigenous uni scholarship. Damien’s heart is broken.
In 2002, Damien is working as a JOURNALIST. He loses control and assaults his boss when he thinks he’s getting fired.
The following year, Damien has relocated to Brisbane, and is seeing a psychiatrist, DR. PHILLIPS. Phillips suggests trying to move on from Sam, who Damien is still obsessed with. As a result, Damien starts a relationship with a fellow patient of Phillips’, CASSANDRA FULTON a BI-POLAR sufferer. Damien and Cassandra fight often and Damien confesses to Phillips that he thinks their mental illnesses make them a poor couple.
Nevertheless, in 2008, they marry. In 2010, Damien moves back to Sydney with Cassandra, who falls into a pit of depression, which angers Damien. He expresses to his new psychiatrist, DR. BALAY, how dissatisfied he is in his marriage.
In 2013, Cassandra gives birth to her and Damien’s daughter, SARAH, who Damien immediately loves unconditionally.
In 2015 however, Damien’s depression is worse than ever. He decides to seek out Sam, who is now married with a daughter of her own, and working with Aboriginal kids in central NSW. He drives out there to meet her, and after a bit of conflict, they express their love for one another and sleep together.
In 2016, Damien and Sam are having an affair, and Cassandra discovers it. This creates conflict between her and Damien, as well as with Sam’s husband. Their marriages end.
In 2017, Sam and Damien are living together. Visiting Cassandra’s house to pick up Sarah, Damien discovers Cassandra has committed SUICIDE by slashing her wrists.
In 2018, Damien is feeling guilty and depressed over Cassandra’s death. His brother PAUL ROWE invites Damien’s family to join his own on a big trip, and it is revealed that Paul is suffering from MOTOR NEURONES DISEASE and will die.
The following few decades of Damien and Sam’s life together is chronicled in a montage that is narrated by Damien. In 2052, Damien is on his death bed suffering from a terminal illness. He chooses to die by ASSISTED SUICIDE due to the pain, and we see his final moments with Sam, who he thanks for making his life worthwhile.
