After the tragic death of his pregnant wife, a Muslim-to-Christian convert and biblical scholar travels back in time in an effort to confirm Christ's divinity.
SYNOPSIS:
This feature was named a Winner of the 2018 Oaxaca Film Festival Global Script Challenge.
Our primary characters, brothers Jabir and Ahmed Kashani, are introduced as two young Muslim boys growing up in Washington, D.C. We then see them several years later, both now living in Texas. Jabir has since embraced Christianity and is a prominent Biblical studies professor, while Ahmed is the head of a Quantum Physics research division for NASA. We also meet Jabir’s wife, Becca, who is several months pregnant with their first child.
Ahmed’s job with NASA in Houston has led to breakthroughs in time travel. Meanwhile, Jabir is now a biblical scholar. He can speak many ancient languages and has a gift of being able to recite any and all passages of the Bible verbatim.
We also meet Jabir’s estranged father, Kasam, who is a prominent D.C. imam and has yet to forgive his son for leaving the Muslim faith.
Jabir’s near perfect life takes a tragic turn when his wife suffers a severe hemorrhage and dies, along with their unborn child. Jabir is quick to blame God for his losses.
Later, Ahmed learns his project’s next phase to send a man to the Holy Land during the time of Christ to observe Jesus during his ministries. Ahmed convinces Jabir that he would be perfect for the job due to his knowledge and background as a religious scholar. Their father, however, has grave concerns that the government will use the technology to rewrite history.
When Jabir makes the jump back in time, he first meets and befriends a 10-year-old Judas Iscariot–the same Judas from scripture. Because Judas is so young, Jabir fears he may have arrived too early to find Jesus.
Meanwhile, in the present day, Ahmed begins preparing to destroy all of the research so that the project does not fall into the wrong hands. That’s when the military arrives at NASA, and Ahmed and Kasam barricade themselves in Mission Control until Jabir can return.
In the past, we eventually meet Mary Magdalene. She tells Jabir she has never heard of Jesus. We also learn she is caring for an old woman, who is also named Mary. That woman cries upon hearing the name “Jesus” and reveals that was to be the name of her son who died during birth. Jabir breaks down at the revelation that Jesus never actually existed.
Judas then takes the dejected Jabir to the temple for Passover. There, Jabir meets the devil in the form of a beggar. The devil taunts Jabir for believing the great lie about Jesus’ existence. This encounter pushes Jabir into action as he tears through the temple, overturning the money exchange tables, and exclaims that he himself is Jesus of Nazareth.
We then see Jabir hanging on the cross, where he is visited by an angel in the form of his late wife. She tells Jabir his filling the role of Jesus was God’s plan all along.
When the team pulls Jabir’s body back into the current time, just as the military storms the NASA facility, he is dead with the wounds of Christ visibly inflicted upon him. In the epilogue, we see Mary Magdalene return to Joshua’s tomb, but she finds that his body is no longer there. She leaves the tomb exclaiming “he has risen.”
