SYNOPSIS:

The pilot opens with Harriet Applegate, an 18-year-old ex-drug addict, celebrating a year of sobriety with her family. However, this moment of hope is immediately undercut when her 16-year-old sister, Kate, is discovered to have opioids, leading to a tense confrontation and the revelation of Kate's own burgeoning drug problem. Meanwhile, Harriet's best friend, Jessie Gamber, a talented playwright, grapples with feelings of abandonment after her father left and a recent breakup. Seeking purpose, Jessie is drawn to the "Hope Global United Church" after meeting Paul Matthews, the leader Brandy Matthews' son. Despite warnings from her pragmatic friend, Alice, who uncovers the church's cult-like history and allegations of abuse, Jessie attends a service. The episode culminates in a series of escalating crises: Kate's decision to take new, dangerous drugs at a party, a car accident involving Jessie's older sister Mel, and Alice experiencing a severe anxiety attack at the church, rooted in past family trauma related to a religious community.
