A German town unscathed by the war surrenders, the people and the Allies mistakenly believe the war is over for them.
SYNOPSIS:
This is an expanded version of FANATIC. It tells the story from multiple perspectives.
It's a quiet morning in a small German town. Inside a headquarters building Hanna and Greta, women auxiliaries, are throwing papers into a fireplace. They agree what they're doing is stupid and leave. Ilsa and Heide enter later with boxes of papers and find the room empty. Heide chooses to burn papers while Ilsa brings in the remaining papers. Lotte, the General's mistress, enters and Ilsa tells Lotte the General left with his wife. Lotte goes into the General's office and makes a phone call.
Ilsa and Heide continue burning papers, Heide tries to convince Ilsa to give it up. Lotte watches an American unit from a church steeple. Hanna and Greta tell the American troops all the soldiers left the town. Heide leaves but Ilsa stays and continues burning papers.
Ilsa has the last box of paper in her hands when she sees sergeant O'Reilly and private Russo. She heaves the box into the fireplace. O'Reilly shoves Ilsa away, pulls the box out of the fireplace, and uses his jacket to die out the fire on the box.
The Americans get orders they are to hold the town. Ilsa and Lotte are kept in the room. The next morning the Germans attack. When the battle nears the building Lotte takes a handgun hidden in her boa and marches towards the window. Ilsa and Lotte struggle over the gun. Ilsa gets the upper hand and throws the gun through the window. Bullets come through the window.
Ilsa and Lotte go to the basement. Lotte admits she was spying on the General and was to report him if he was planning to leave or surrender the town. She also told her superior about the size of the American force. O'Reilly and Russo are seriously wounded in the battle.
After the battle Ilsa and Lotte are questioned. Ilsa is uncooperative. Lotte is released. Lotte leaves town and attempts to report on the American advance. After the war an older officer questions Ilsa about her actions. The officer offers Ilsa a job.
An epilogue tells the fate of the main characters.
