SYNOPSIS:
This is In the Name of the Father meets Shawshank Redemption. It is an ensemble character driven drama critiquing the corruption and injustices in the legal/justice system and the atrocities committed in prison. It also explores the true nature of Islam and its exploitation by the extremists.
A young renowned social scientist and entrepreneur, LEILA, is indicted on charges of terrorism. Held without bail in the federal penitentiary with her husband, MUSTAFA, they face execution if found guilty.
Chances of winning are bleak. Exonerating evidence is withheld by the prosecution. Circumstantial evidences are incriminating. Their religious leader, DA, judge and FBI investigator all cooperate to bring them down and informants surrounding them have built a case against them. A glimmer of hope emerges when witnesses are indicted. This too is soon shattered with a new star witness, codefendant and right hand man to Mustafa. Mustafa succumbs and convinces Leila to take the plea in exchange for clemency.
Meanwhile in prison, the inmates find Leila quite different and amusing. Her strength of character, penchant for peace and views on life touch their hearts. After she teaches self-defense and helps indict the officer molesting an inmate, she gains an instant following and they all promise to meet after their release. Except, they don't know that Leila will never see the light of day.
Few years later, at Mustafa and Leila's plea and sentencing, exonerating evidence sent by an informant who grew a conscience is destroyed by the judge. Leila collapses in court from poisoning. Mustafa escapes and joins the ranks of extremists vowing vengeance for Leila's death. Leila's followers, on the other hand, gather and commit to Leila's mission for peace.
