MOVE - Daren Kaper and classmates, fight a School board initiative to extinguish Arts programs from their inner city High School. Will their peaceful protest be enough to save the programs they love and inspire positive change in their community?
Move is a high-powered dance drama that combines the inspiring plight of a group of talented yet undervalued students with explosive choreographed dance numbers. DAREN KAPER, marginalized 17 year old B-Boy dance prodigy, plagued by the loss of his older sibling-- uses dance as an escape from his reality. Daren is part of ‘New Skool’ along with best bro, KENNETH FRAZIER senior class super-slacker extraordinaire and several classmates-- together they are the baddest crew around.
Daren navigates the stern restrictions of his Bible-thumping mother VIVIAN KAPER until he is caught after he sneaks out to help defend their ‘King of the Ring” title, and is subsequently arrested. Vivian, refusing to lose another child to the streets forbids Daren from dancing with his friends. When members of the Dallas school board rezone the school districts, their inside man, PRINCIPLE MELVIN KLINE pretentious scholar elite decides to remove beloved elective courses and teachers. To make matters worse, local crime-boss TRE ‘MONSTER’ BOOKER, enlists Daren to take his brother’s place as a new drug runner.
Daren’s only solace comes from dance and a budding romantic relationship with long-time friend BREE MOSES. When handsome dance Adonis, MR. SHANE MASON’S class is cancelled, Daren and his friends have no chase but to take their protest to the streets-- using their unique talents to gain the support and awareness of the community. With the help of local Mega-church FRIENDSHIP WEST BAPTIST CHURCH and its community activist PASTOR FREDRICK DOUGLAS HAYNES III the students plan to put on a block-party fund raiser in hopes of reinstating classes and teachers.
Daren is unable to avoid ‘Monster’ and upon finally being tracked down the drug-dealer all but admits to killing Daren’s brother, CHRIS and threatens Daren’s life. Shane tries to intervene but takes a vicious beating for his effort causing Daren to begin carrying a pistol for protection. With his dance mentor hospitalized, the block party/protest fast approaching and Principle Kline trying everything to undermine their efforts-- Daren is at a loss for ideas. Daren helps the police, gather enough evidence to put Monster away.
In a last ditch effort Principal Kline attempts to bribe Pastor Haynes into reneging on supporting the students but when that fails he executes a surprise locker inspection which turns up Daren’s pistol in Kenneth’s locker. Just as Kenneth is about to be cuffed Daren takes the blame for the illegal weapon and is taken into custody. With the School Board, Principal, and Police department all seemingly against them and their best dancer behind bars-- how will the students pull off this show, or will they at all?
