THE KING OF CLUBS

THE KING OF CLUBS
By John Etterlee

GENRE: Action, Military/War
LOGLINE:

Disillusioned by their mission, a team of Army Rangers pursues a high-value target across the Iraqi desert, only to find themselves chasing a ghost.

SYNOPSIS:

Nathan, an Army Ranger, and his team pursue a high-value kill or capture target (Izzat Ibrahim Al-Douri), who is directly responsible for torture, numerous civilian and coalition deaths, and one of the few Ba’ath party members to evade capture after the fall of Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi government. He was designated as “The King of Clubs” in the Iraqi Most wanted playing cards by the United States intelligence community. During a cordon and search, Steven, a team member, fails to fully inspect a Muslim woman during a search of a neighborhood in Fallujah, knowing that it is frowned upon in the Arab world. Minutes later, she detonates a suicide vest and kills members of another team.

Later, the Rangers learn that Al-Douri has begun commanding his own insurgent Army, and they set out to find his conspirators. Going door to door throughout neighborhoods from Fallujah to Baghdad, they soon realize the hold he has on his people. With a tip from a local informant, (Codename: Sparrow) the Rangers determined that Al-Douri has been coordinating insurgent attacks from the safety of Syria. A few days later, the informant is found dead in a ditch. The Rangers form a joint task force with the Special Forces for the sole purpose of finding Al-Douri. He shows up in Baghdad a few weeks later and beheads a collaborator as a warning to everyone else. Once, again, he disappears.

Al-Douri proves to be increasingly difficult to track, as he is given safe haven by the Assad regime in Syria. He pops up in Iraq and disappears just as quick. Nathan and his team begin to see that they are seemingly chasing a ghost. The stressors of war and lives lost all culminate together when Nathan becomes severely injured trying to save the life of one of his Soldiers as they track their primary target to an insurgent stronghold outside of Baghdad. After the raid, the Rangers report that Al-Douri has been killed. However, they are sorely mistaken.

Nathan has lost his leg and his Army career from an RPG explosion. He is sitting in his living room after being medically retired a few months later, in shock, while Al-Douri resurfaces on CNN. Steven shows up at Nathan's house to check on him, crying and confesses that he failed to find the vest on the woman that killed their friends. Nathan and Steven share a moment as they come to terms with the events that led them there in the first place.
