Grieving the loss of his father, Jimmy, a bitter young boy, lashes out at Christmas and accidentally breaks a treasured ornament. That night, he and his sister Samantha are mysteriously transported into the magical world inside their Christmas tree, where the ornaments come to life. But not all are welcoming -- Scrimshaw, a damaged, vengeful ornament, seeks to turn the entire tree into a dark, forgotten wasteland known as Empty Side.

With time running out before sunrise -- when they’ll turn into ornaments forever -- Jimmy and Samantha embark on a thrilling quest to reach the Star Angel, the only one with the power to restore them. Along the way, they befriend a ragtag group of ornaments: Pockets, a tramp clown with a mended heart; Lighthouse, a spirited but faded beacon of hope; and the Sheriff, a lawman with more bravado than bravery. Facing falling branches, rogue snowmen, and Scrimshaw’s army of misfit decorations, Jimmy must find the courage to rebuild what’s broken—both inside the tree and within himself.
