SYNOPSIS:

With the assassination of President McKinley in 1901, Eleanor Roosevelt’s uncle Teddy will be moving to the White House.

In Milwaukee, blues singer BESSIE SMITH seeswhere Teddy Roosevelt himself was nearly assassinated.

Bessies’s back in Philly-- drinking champagne in her alley-- when her singing is heard by HedyLamarr, playing hooky from her MGM English tutor, and hanging out with Emmett Kelly, the acrobat becoming the clown Weary Willie.

NOW First Lady ELEANOR ROOSEVELT’s invited EMMETT to perform at her first New Deal commune in Arthurdale. ELEANOR’s upset about lynchings of blacks in the South, and Prohibition has ended. Thus begins her road trip to West Virginia with Emmett, Bessie and Hedy. 47 seconds

J EDGAR HOOVER calls Eleanor a horse-faced commie. Wanting to become president himself and jealous of her popularity, HOOVER conspires with a wealthy female fan of his in West Virginia, MARVA JO, to “find someone like that anarchist who shot McKinley. Eleanor is on her way.”

Then FBI men run Eleanor’s caroff the road, while MARVA JO enticesan outcast redneck woman BOZENA to snuff out the First Lady.

Arthurdale homesteaders come from an impoverished, wretched valley of unemployed coal miners.

After a square-dance, BOZENA frightens ELEANOR, while BESSIE learns of an absinthe still—AND of Hoover’s complicity with bootleggers. 50 sec=97 = 1.37

At night the Klu Klux Klan visit the carnival trailer looking for Eleanor.

Marva Jo’s in cahoots with two German sisters, Nazi supporters working with Dr. Goebells.
