MIRROR FOR THE SUN
By Judah Ray

GENRE: Sports Drama, Romance
LOGLINE:

A Black teen from Compton becomes a big wave surfer on Hawaii’s North Shore.

SYNOPSIS:

Mirror for the Sun follows Rusty King, an 18-year-old from Compton caught between the expectations of street life and the quiet pull of the ocean he shares with his father. When his father is killed trying to stop escalating violence, Rusty is left with one final request. Do not inherit the streets. Choose something better.

Honoring that wish, Rusty leaves Los Angeles and moves to Hawaii to pursue surfing. In the tight-knit and territorial surf community of the North Shore, he immediately stands out as an outsider. He faces humiliation, rivalry, and cultural barriers that test his pride and patience. Instead of reacting with anger, Rusty begins to earn respect through discipline and humility.

With guidance from Sully, a seasoned mentor, and grounded by Nalani, a local girl who challenges his ideas about love and strength, Rusty trains for The Eddie, one of the most prestigious big wave competitions in the world. As the competition approaches, the weight of his father’s absence and the pressure to prove himself threaten to overwhelm him.

In a defining moment on the water, Rusty must confront fear, grief, and expectation. By choosing courage over ego and discipline over rage, he redefines what masculinity and respect truly mean. In doing so, he earns acknowledgment from those who doubted him and claims an identity that is entirely his own.

Mirror for the Sun is a coming-of-age sports drama about grief, belonging, and a young man redefining strength on his own terms.
