GOD SMACK
By Diana Lanham

GENRE: Comedy, Drama
LOGLINE:

When two archangels place a bet on whether mankind is worthy, a local man becomes their unwitting test subject and finds himself pitted against the internet when he inadvertently kills off half the planet in one night.

SYNOPSIS:

COMPS: God Smack is similar in tone to the Supernatural TV series.

SYNOPSIS:

GOD SMACK opens in a Seattle Starbucks, where Archangels MICHAEL and GABRIEL are arguing, yet again, over whether mankind can handle another savior. Michael is eternally hopeful. Gabriel thinks they’re forever doomed. They decide to test the next person who walks through the door, gifting them with ‘the touch’ (the power to heal), just to kick it up a notch.

In walks SAM LANDERS, an upbeat, go-with-the-flow veterinarian. Sam is living his best life – his girlfriend TYLER is a doctor, his veterinary practice is thriving, and he has a great relationship with his laidback, widowed mom MARGO who he lives with on the sprawling family farm.

Be careful what you wish for.

Later that night, Sam and Tyler are having cocktails with their friend and lamenting about the state of the world. Unaware that supernatural forces have just hijacked his fate, Sam utters fateful words: “Wouldn’t it be great if we woke up tomorrow and evil was wiped off the planet?”

The archangels make it so.

The next morning, the world wakes up to a chilling discovery – millions of people have mysteriously dropped dead.

Did Sam just usher in the Apocalypse?

At first, no one can figure out what’s going – not the CDC, not the government. But when a pattern develops, linking the dead to some of the nastiest people on the planet, the world starts to wonder…is this manmade, or maybe something else?

Later that day, an encounter at Tyler’s hospital leaves an injured construction worker convinced that Sam healed him. Enter pouty and self-absorbed ARCHANGEL LUCIFER, who is seriously pissed that Michael and Gabriel killed off his darlings. Lucifer manipulates the construction worker into taking his story public, leaking Sam’s identity. A scared planet latches onto the story and it goes viral.

The internet is divided – is Sam the Anti-Christ or the Second Coming?

As Sam becomes the center of the social media universe, throngs of religious fanatics and end-of-world partyers descend upon his family farm, hoping for a miracle.

But they’re not the only ones coming after him:

  • A local news reporter races to the farm to get the scoop of a lifetime.
  • The FBI suspects Sam may be a master bio-terrorist and they send out their agents.
  • Manipulated by one of Lucifer’s sexy minions, a misguided youth thinks Sam is the anti-Christ and heads out to destroy him.

Things done in the dark always comes to light…

  • Why is Sam so adamant that the mysterious global event has nothing to do with him, even when he’s clearly the common denominator in a string of ‘coincidental’ occurrences?
  • Sam and Tyler are very much in love. So why can’t Sam commit?
  • And why do Sam and Margo avoid their barn like the plague?

Holed up in the farmhouse to escape the growing crowds, Sam, Margo, and Tyler are further trapped when the FBI arrives and sequesters them. But things take a seriously dark turn when a casual conversation thrusts Sam and Margo’s secret into the light. Flashback: Everyone believes Sam’s beloved father mysteriously disappeared when Sam was a teenager. But the truth is Margo caught her husband committing a reprehensible act and she killed him. More concerned with people finding out how evil her husband was than going to jail, Margo and Sam covered it up, burying both Sam’s dad and the evidence under the barn.

The source of Sam’s denial and fears:

  • He and Margo are afraid to sell the farm out of fear that someone will raise the barn and discover the truth.
  • Sam is afraid to commit to Tyler out of fear he may become his father’s son. What if deep inside, Sam has his father’s dark impulses?
  • And if evil were really being God Smacked, wouldn’t Sam and his mother be dead too?

Tensions between the crowd, police and FBI finally erupt. In the ensuing chaos, Margo is shot and lies dying. But the universe moves in mysterious ways and we discover that the Archangels have one more trick up their sleeve. In the end, Sam and Margo find the one thing they both desperately need. Redemption.

WRITER’S NOTES:

  • This is not a story about religion or Christianity. This is a tale about the cracks beneath the surface, the journey from guilt to redemption, and the extremely fine line between good and evil.
  • Although the story is global in scope, the scenes are fairly contained, with the majority taking place at Sam’s farmhouse.
