A real estate agent in New York City (and widow with a college age son), leverages her friends, expertise, and Christmas miracles to find a way to pay her son’s last semester of college and save her struggling local family-owned market before Christmas and just may find a Christmas miracle for herself in the process.
SYNOPSIS:
EVE (45), real estate agent in New York City, is presented with a $20K annual bonus from her boss with the challenge of doubling it if she can manage to pull in the highest commission in December. Eve is a single mom (a widow) whose son is attending Harvard Business School. Due to administrative restructuring, he lost his scholarship funding and needs tuition for his last semester so he can graduate in the Spring.
Eve and her sassy (also single) best friend and colleague, CONNIE (45), agree to share any commission as they work to net a potential high buyer they call their “whale.” Eve also holds the cozy daydream of somehow being able to help her neighborhood Italian grocer, Sal, who rents and is barely able to make ends meet to run her neighborhood market and deli, “Sal’s Market.”
Eve and Connie find out from an intern that a competing real estate agent and local nemesis, NICKI (45), has a real estate agent contract with a “whale”, LIAM WENTWORTH (50), a Swiss chocolatier looking for property in New York to be near his daughter, a student at Columbia, who seems to be the perfect potential buyer for a penthouse that is so new it is not yet listed that Eve recently found out about.
The loveable, conniving duo (Eve and Connie), decide to try and merely plant the seed in Liam’s ear that if he wants to see the perfect property, he should come to them.
They successfully stalk Nicki and Liam while Nicki is showing him properties, Connie distracts Nicki by stealing her cab while Eve gives Liam her business card and briefly tells him about the penthouse. They slip away while Nicki is still annoyed by the cab incident, mission complete.
Eve finds out from Sal that Nicki actually owns his store and apartment above the store. She is his “witch of a landlord.” This fact redoubles Eve’s efforts to influence Liam and help Sal.
Meanwhile, JAKE (20s), Eve’s Harvard student son, is visiting her over Christmas break. She convinces him to help Sal with some business advice to help keep his head above water. He suggests stocking basic survival items for the neighborhood folks in case of emergencies and getting a generator for the store so he can keep the lights on and keep doing business.
A winter storm brews and Nicki cancels Liam’s showings because of the severe weather. The intern finds out that Liam is free and they invite Liam to see the unlisted penthouse. He agrees and Eve meets him at his hotel on cross country skis since all public transportation is shut down due to the heavy snowfall. Liam is impressed by Eve, loves the property, and asks her and Jake to dinner with him and his daughter.
Nicki finds out that Eve showed Liam the property, finds out she is out to dinner with Liam by accident from the clumsy intern and goes down there to confront her.
Liam sees that Eve’s actions were ambitious but a bit out of line. He cancels his contract with Nicki and says he is going back to Switzerland and will come back to house hunt after the holiday season.
Jake, wanting to help his mom, prepares a business proposal and gets it to Liam before he leaves for Switzerland and Eve leaves a heartfelt apology message for him. Liam is touched and inspired and decides he will go through with Jake’s proposal.
Liam calls Eve, Sal, and Jake together at Sal’s to tell them that he has decided to go with Eve as his real estate agent (and he wants to buy the penthouse), also wants to buy Sal’s from Nicki (the bad landlord), and wants to renovate it as his company’s first U.S. store, have Sal manage it, and Jake be his regional manager (with a sizeable starter bonus to pay for his tuition), once he graduates Harvard Business School, of course.
They all get together and take a before picture in front of Sal’s Market and ONE YEAR LATER…they all get together to take a picture in front of the newly renovated store where Eve and Liam are together and Sal is running the place. Eve is now convinced that regular people can make Christmas miracles come true.
