SYNOPSIS:
In his age, PERRY BETANCOURT has seen it all. He's a man now living in New York's high society. Adjoined by his lovely wife of over twenty-five years, MIRIAM, he garnered a reputation for being a true pillar in the community. A true philanthropist, Perry has given himself and millions of dollars back to the community , creating a wealthy existence. Together him and Miriam have raised three children. The oldest, a boy named PEYTON, 26. The middle child is a daughter named PRISCILLA, 24. And the youngest son named PARRISH at 18 years old. At first glance, Perry seems to have it all. Beautiful and elegant wife, beautiful children, and a lavish lifestyle.
But Perry's beginnings was that of a common hood who came up in the slums of Harlem doing petty crimes. Together with his half brother, BOONIE, they pulled small heists to doing hits for local kingpins, he turned his attention to dealing crack cocaine and heroin. Upon his rise in the drug game, Perry made a lot of enemies, and "took out" those enemies quietly becoming a kingpin onto himself. His slick nature made him hard to hit and even harder to get caught. He had no problem stepping on number two to become number one. But as time passed, Perry became convinced that there had to be a better way to live. The constant threat of looking over his shoulder and doing 'hits' and robberies for profit started to get old to him. It's not until he met an individual that convinced him to invest his money in a business that would generate residual income. After the investment, Perry sees this as a way out of a life of crime. He gradually separated himself from his hot headed half brother, who started to feel betrayed. The two went their separate ways bitterly, with Perry moving up financially and Boonie sinking deep into a bitter end. Fast forward 15-20 years, Perry has built a massive financial empire, having invested into several businesses and gaining lots of power and exposure in the process. After building his empire by investing in various profitable businesses, Perry suddenly stepped out on a lot individuals, moved up in society and never looked back.
But when those dealings in his checkered past begin to resurface, they start a chain reaction of events that will cause Perry and his associates, henchmen SMILEY and BOBBY BOSE, to have to deal with them head on. When these new threats start to get after his family, one by one, Perry must come to terms and do whatever he must to protect and save his wife, children, and ultimately, his own life... Even kill for it... Something he had sworn to never go back to.
Beginning with the first episode entitled, "Freedom Money", it's Priscilla's wedding day. Her husband to be is an employee of one of Perry's firms named, BRIAN BILLINGSLEY. Perry is not to fond of this union, as the relationship was mostly kept secret from her overprotective father. Today is also the day that Perry and Miriam's oldest and estranged son, Peyton, is released from a stint in rehab to attend the wedding. Perry is torn about this as he feels Peyton still needs to rehab from his rampant drug use. As Peyton entered his preteen years, he started following in his father's footsteps of abusing illegal substances and this caused turmoil among father and son.
The episode reveals several secrets and dilemmas as we learn that Priscilla's soon to be husband may not be who he makes himself out to be, which has Perry initially suspicious. Apparently, Brian has a secret past of his own, which is ultimately seized by two overzealous detectives, ROLAND and SEARCY. They've been on to Perry for quite some time and strongly believe his dealings and "investments" were that of shady criminal activity. Det. Roland enlists the 'assistance' of Brian to obtain any financial records and/or anything incriminating to bring him down. Doing so will keep the reluctant Brian out of jail and his gambling debt and criminal record clean.
Also, Perry and Miriam ultimately learn that Peyton's life is in danger from an earlier run in with some drug dealers before he went into rehab. Perry must decide to either come to his son's aid, or ultimately let him go. By episode end, the threat of Perry's past come to a head when he realizes a deadly secret connecting him to his wife's tragic family history.
With each episode, we gradually see the once calm and constantly composed Perry slowly start to unravel. And when things finally reach a boiling point, an emotional climax will rock this family to its very core....
