A draft-dodging musician in the 1960’s struggles to get his new band their big break and build a life for his unexpected family.
SYNOPSIS:
The rock scene was exploding in the 1960s with new bands from around the world. Several of those bands like the Guess Who, BTO and Neil Young came from Winnipeg. My dad not only wanted to be among them, but his home was frequented by many of those who did make it as they worked to hone their skill and find their sound. It was a time of intense creativity, tireless self-promotion, new family and thankless day jobs.
The series follows the life of Glenn during his early career as a musician in The White Case, honing his skills, discovering groupies, finding love and ultimately having to choose between his dreams and providing for an unexpected family.
The pilot begins with Glenn seemingly having it all. The death of his pal in Vietnam, casts a shadow even though he finds it hard to cope with negativity. When he and two of his brother’s names comes up, they flee back to Canada and find they have to start from scratch.
While Glenn struggles to settle down, he wrestles with the idea that he might have to give up his musical ambitions to support himself, but things start looking up when he lands a job on his older brother’s survey crew and pulls together a handful of audition rejects to form a band.
His younger brother isn’t having such an easy time, and makes the decision to head back to North Dakota to enlist. The decision hits them all hard but there’s nothing they can say to change his mind.
Glenn’s housewarming is ultimately also Steve’s farewell party. This party turns out to be the start of Glenn’s life in so many ways. His new band plays for the first time, he’s officially living on his own and ultimately meets his first wife Nina as a result. They meet just before he reluctantly puts his brother on a bus to an uncertain future.
