THE GRATEFUL

THE GRATEFUL
By Mark Brown

GENRE: Horror, Crime
LOGLINE:

A man and his daughter have lived a peaceful decade in an isolated and magical Scottish community that exist symbiotically alongside the elemental beings, The Urisk, who keep the land in return for their gratitude. But when the man's past comes back to violently haunt him the danger comes not only from intruders seeking retribution but also the Urisk who switch from benevolent to malevolent when they see ingratitude.

SYNOPSIS:

An old woman sits by a Highland loch washing blood soaked clothes. Who’s clothes they are is unclear but this is the vision that haunts Tanner’s dreams.

Tanner and his daughter Maisie arrived at the tiny village of Glen Fruin ten years ago. Tanners wife, Maisie's mother, had died and Tanner took 5 years to get over it. They stopped wandering when they found Glen Fruin, an ancient village that had been there since man’s beginning.

But before men there was the Urisk.

The Urisk are spirits of the Highlands. They keep the land pure and fruitful, usually with the help of whoever is the resident of the land. And as long as those residents are grateful the Urisk will help.

Tanner and his daughter are beneficiaries of this. But after Maisie and her mischevious friend are caught trying to catch a peek of these mysterious beings Maisie realises the penalty for upsetting the otherwise benevolent Urisk when her arm is broken in an ‘accident’. The injury is beyond the villages capabilities and so she must go to the city hospital.

While at the hospital Maisie is spotted by a group of thugs who think she is the spitting image of someone they know. Denise, a former drug addict and criminal turned successful businesswoman. On seeing the picture of Maisie, Denise drops everything and heads to Scotland with her cronies, including her newly released convict boyfriend Scrape who used to run the drug business that Denise took over and turned legitimate.

On arriving at the village Denise confronts town leader, Sean. She says Maisie is in fact Sophie, her and Scrapes daughter, kidnapped fifteen years earlier by an unhinged man. Sean denies any knowledge of this and Denise leaves unsatisfied.

Tanner is meanwhile up at mountain the shrine to his dead wife. He is pondering the vision that he and now Maisie have shared. The Washer woman. Otherwise known as The Bean Nighe. A prophetic spirit often seen by soldiers on the eve of battle telling them they are going to die. Denise, unbeknownst to them, has also had this vision.

Tanner’s pondering is cut short when a Urisk appears to inform him that he needs to get back to the town.

He returns to see the town in disarray as Denise returned to find her 'daughter' and she killed anyone that got in her way. Tanner finds the rest of the locals hiding and helps them flee but not before confessing his role in this horror.

Maisie is not his real daughter. His real daughter died in the womb when his wife was murdered by Scrape 15 years earlier after getting caught up in a drugs hit 15 years. Scrape went to jail but Tanner wanted a harder justice. So he went to Scrapes place with nothing in his mind other than revenge. But instead he found an unconscious, drugged up Denise laid next to a dirty helpless baby. A moment of clarity showed him a different way. So he took the baby and disappeared. He moved from place to place with his infant ‘daughter, finally happening upon Glen Fruin.

Tanner is devastated at the horror his choice has brought upon this peaceful place but all he can do now is try and save the daughter he loves so deeply. With the help of the Urisk the locals escape. Then Tanner and the Urisk turn the tables on the gang. The Urisk are a fearsome force when wronged. Armed with iron teeth and nature itself they and Tanner cut a horrifying swathe through the gang, setting up a terrifying finale with obsessed Denise.
