SYNOPSIS:

LENA CROSS, 44, is Metro 911’s most accomplished dispatcher. Calm, exacting, and able to diagnose emergencies through sound alone, she manages several life-or-death calls simultaneously while quietly correcting less experienced operators. Her professional control conceals a damaged relationship with her nineteen-year-old daughter, TESSA, a sound artist who believes Lena has spent her life listening to strangers while refusing to hear her own family.

Tessa is producing an experimental performance called RESONANT FREQUENCIES inside a decommissioned telephone exchange. The building’s abandoned copper lines and cavernous switching chambers transform ambient noise into music. Lena worries about exits and fire codes; Tessa wants her mother to listen.

A lightning strike disrupts Metro Communications. An obsolete indicator marked TRUNK NINE illuminates even though the copper emergency line was disconnected years ago. Lena receives a terrified call from ELAINE WARD, who whispers that an intruder has entered her kitchen. The call carries a timestamp exactly one hour in the future.

Following protocol, Lena calls Elaine’s number—and reaches her alive, watching television in her undisturbed house. Lena has the same woman on two lines: alive in the present and dying in the future.

Lena dispatches officers despite the objections of her supervisor and former mentor, BENJAMIN HOLT. At first, the house is quiet. Exactly one hour later, a hooded intruder enters through the kitchen and prepares to kill Elaine. Because Lena placed an officer nearby, the attack is interrupted. The intruder escapes, leaving behind a black telephone-testing token stamped with the number 60.

The old line rings again. Retired dispatcher FRANK HASKELL calls from a carbon-monoxide-filled car, one hour before he will be trapped inside it. By analyzing an obsolete elevator voice and the sound of a chain-driven gate, Lena and Detective DANI RUIZ locate the correct courthouse garage and save him.

A third call comes from NIA COLE, a paramedic drowning inside one of two rooftop water tanks. Lena isolates the sound of a ventilation fan in the transmission, enabling firefighters to identify the correct tank. Nia survives and reveals the connection between the victims.

Eight years earlier, thirteen-year-old EMILY ROOK called 911 while her violent stepfather broke into her bedroom. At the same time, a school bus carrying eleven children plunged into a reservoir. Lena diverted every available unit to the bus and placed Emily on hold for eleven minutes. Seven children survived, but police reached Emily too late.

Holt subsequently ordered the response record altered to blame a network failure. Haskell approved it, Elaine reviewed it, Nia repeated it at the inquest, City Attorney JULIAN SAYE sealed it—and Lena signed it.

Emily’s father, ADRIAN ROOK, is a former telephone technician who has spent eight years demanding the complete recording of his daughter’s final hour. Now he is subjecting everyone responsible to sixty-minute “line tests.” Every rescue deletes the digital evidence and allows Adrian to monitor how Lena finds his victims.

Holt removes Lena from duty, but rookie dispatcher SAMIR PATEL secretly connects her to Trunk Nine using an analog field telephone. The next future call is from Tessa. She whispers that she is trapped somewhere inside the telephone exchange and warns Lena not to send police because Adrian follows the sirens.

Tessa is still alive in the present. Lena cannot evacuate the building without creating the future she heard. She and Dani approach quietly while Samir remains inside Communications, recording the supernatural calls on cassette before the system can erase them.

Another transmission leads Lena and Dani to Julian Saye, trapped with his young aide in a sabotaged glass elevator. They rescue both, but Dani is badly injured. Before leaving, Saye gives them the original Rook case files and agrees to surrender evidence against himself.

Lena returns to Communications and retrieves the complete analog recording of Emily’s call. Holt finally admits he falsified the report to conceal chronic understaffing approved by Deputy Director Crane. Lena recognizes that Holt allowed her to carry the guilt because she was strong enough to survive it.

Adrian infiltrates Communications, abducts Holt, and takes him to the telephone exchange. Using Tessa’s wireless monitor frequency, Lena contacts her daughter without alerting Adrian. Samir broadcasts false police activity across tactical channels, drawing Adrian’s attention away from the exchange. Lena enters through the underground cable vault while Tessa secretly guides her by describing Adrian’s movements through sound.

Inside the main switching chamber, Adrian has built a shrine of hundreds of hanging telephones. Tessa and Holt are imprisoned in separate glass rooms connected to an antique electrical switch. One direction will electrocute Tessa; the other will drop Holt into a flooded cable pit. Adrian streams the confrontation and orders Lena to choose.

In complete darkness, Tessa uses feedback and monitor speakers to misdirect Adrian while guiding Lena through the switching floor. Weeks later, Holt’s confession leads to indictments and a public inquiry. Lena testifies that she would still have sent the units to save the children in the reservoir. Her failure was not making the impossible choice; it was allowing the city to erase the child who paid for it.
