A self-absorbed family arrives at their recently deceased Grandmother's lake-house for one last holiday before it's sold. But when they choose to disrespect her lifelong rules, she returns from the dead to teach them a final lesson.
SYNOPSIS:
A phone rings. Grandma has passed. Tears in his eyes, her son CHUCK (60s) pulls out the old family photo album to reminisce. His wife ROSE (50s) watches with concern. Yellowed photos of GRANDMA dredge up terrifying memories in Rose; things she has kept hidden from gentle Chuck. Rose not only hated, but feared his witch of a mother.
One month later:
Chuck and Rose's four ADULT CHILDREN (20s-30s) and two YOUNG GRANDCHILDREN (8-10yo) arrive to visit for Easter holiday. Chuck suggests that his adult children all go stay at Grandma's house one last time before it's sold. He really gets their attention when he urges them to take whatever they like from the house before the estate sale...
Nothing like a good old-fashioned road trip!
During the drive, Grandma's adult grandchildren reminisce about their childhood holidays at Grandma's house. The rose-colored nostalgia quickly dissipates when initially happy memories are overshadowed by long-forgotten terrors of a verbally abusive Grandmother, her creepy doll collection, and her horrid red house situated on a lonely lake.
None of these adult grandchildren are very saintly and their individual flaws surface to reveal that each has given Grandma good reason to hold vengeful wrath against them. They came to her house to enjoy the Easter holiday as they did when they were children, but by the time Resurrection Day arrives, all they want is to escape with their lives.
The adult grandchildren slowly realize that Grandma's spirit lingers on. In non-corporeal form, she forces them to relive their worst memories and fears through waking dreams and nightmares. Unbeknown to our ensemble cast, Grandma wasn't just a mean old woman but an actual witch who used her ancient craft to plot her resurrection through the murder of her own undeserving bloodline.
One by one, Grandma brutally murders her heirs with no shortage of witty lecturing and one-liners. She takes her time to kill each in unique fashion according to their sins. As each dies, she grows more alive.
Chuck's wife Rose has had a lingering feeling that something wasn't right. After a frightening call from one of her children, she decides to drive out to the old house where she comes face to face with a now re-animated Grandma.
After decades of hate between them, there is a final showdown between the two matriarchs. With the help of her eldest daughter's sacrifice and an old V-6 Buick, Rose finally manages to turn the tables on Grandma and burn her to ashes like the vile witch she was.
In a brief epilogue, we see Grandma had more than one plan to enact her miracle of resurrection; she will be back!
