THE CLUB LARGESSE MURDERS

THE CLUB LARGESSE MURDERS
By Tom Stohlgren

GENRE: Crime, Comedy
LOGLINE:

When a string of suspicious 'accidents' rocks a prestigious country club, the police department’s most inept detective must navigate a web of lies, uncover a human trafficking ring, and solve multiple murders to expose the truth.

SYNOPSIS:

It’s midnight at the luxurious country club swimming pool. The lifeguard, JOHNNY DEPTH (20s), is shot in the heart by a speargun. The chubby shooter, dressed in a wetsuit, escapes. The club’s General Manager, KRYSTAL JENNINGS (30s–50s), insists it was an accident. CHIEF DONTE JACKSON (55), the club’s only black member, assigns his worst detective, ANGEL MORALES (30s–50s), to ensure the incident is ruled an accidental death. Then the Chief is found dead in the club’s restaurant. Though the CORONER (40), also a club member, claims it was simple food poisoning, Detective Morales grows suspicious.

Krystal and many of the Latinx staff members—who wear Americanized name tags—use “HearBuddy” translation devices in their ears, allowing constant communication with the club owner’s personal assistant. Among the staff: housekeeper MARIA (AKA Barbie, 25), receptionist SUZI (AKA Consuela, 21), and waiter/bartender ANTOINE (AKA Arthur), all promote the theory that the deaths were accidental. Morales, however, finds the HearBuddy devices irritating and distracting to her investigation.

Tension escalates between Krystal and the Detective over how the investigation is handled. Through the Owner’s P.A., Krystal pushes to avoid bad publicity and cover things up. She arranges speargun lessons in the pool as a diversion and induces vomiting with Ipecac syrup in the restaurant to support the food poisoning theory. Meanwhile, the club’s bar hosts “ICE Breaker” nights—offering free drinks and appetizers to immigration agents willing to turn a blind eye to the club’s undocumented staff. But the stakes are raised when a judge’s wife is bludgeoned with a golf club at midnight on the golf course, further fueling Morales’s suspicions.

As Detective Morales investigates, she uncovers that many staff members are undocumented immigrants. Krystal is under increasing pressure to cover up the club’s secrets and avoid federal scrutiny. HERB GOTTLIEB (60s), the former groundskeeper, emerges as a key suspect. He was recently replaced by a robotic lawnmower—with no severance, pension, or even a retirement cake. Herb orchestrates a dramatic showdown with MR. LARGESSE (70s), the pompous, overweight club owner, on the 18th fairway.

Herb reveals himself as the owner's estranged brother and presents video evidence of Mr. Largesse’s involvement in human trafficking, using Johnny Depth (AKA Marco Torres) to recruit club employees. Detective Morales accuses Mr. Largesse of the three murders, but Herb stuns everyone by confessing to two of them. The Coroner is revealed to be complicit, having falsified times and causes of death to protect his golf buddy, the owner. Just as Morales delivers her big reveal, Mr. Largesse collapses from a heart attack—only for Herb to remotely control the robotic lawnmower via smartphone to finish him off. In a somewhat happy ending, MRS. LARGESSE takes over ownership of the club and secures Presidential pardons for the undocumented staff. They continue on as one big “happy” family—though not a real one, more like a reality TV family, complete with fake smiles all around.

Great logline! I think "uncover a human trafficking ring" gives too much away. Maybe something along the lines of "... the truth turns out to be more disturbing that he could have imagined..."

The Club Largesse Murders sounds exciting, Tom Stohlgren! I'm looking forward to watching it, mainly because of "the police department’s most inept detective"! I picture Michael Scott or Mr. Bean as a detective.
