CHRISTMAS SINGLES' NITE

CHRISTMAS SINGLES' NITE
By Tom Stohlgren

GENRE: Mystery, Comedy
LOGLINE:

A nightclub owner is found “dead” in a freezer—except he isn’t—forcing a single-mom bartender to partner with a tipsy detective to catch a killer among eleven quirky singles before someone actually dies or falls in love.

SYNOPSIS:

Off-duty DETECTIVE ROSIE ESTRADA (32), in a sleek blue dress, returns to an elegant nightclub’s Second Annual Singles’ Nite, after arresting the pregnant British bartender, Samanthe “SAM” (28), for assault the previous year. ANTOINE (30s) owns the nightclub but is nowhere to be seen. Rosie orders an iced tea, but is delivered potent New England Iced Teas by accident. At 7 PM, Sam must retrieve more ice in the kitchen and asks GERRY (30), her wild friend in a Hawaiian shirt, to cover the bar. Moments later, Sam finds Antoine, lifeless in the freezer, SCREAMS, and pulls him out.

Sam pulls the tipsy detective into the kitchen to assess the scene. Dr. READY (35), a doctor with anger issues, checks for a pulse and pronounces Antoine dead. The Detective is forced to treat it as a suspicious death and begins to study the persons of interest gathered around her, and contaminating the crime scene. Along with Sam, Dr. Ready, and Gerry, we meet DOLPH (25), a German millionaire, EMILY (22), barista at a local coffee shop, SOFIE (28), a socialite, separated from her husband, MERRY (22), an overly enthusiastic matchmaker, DEMARCUS (23), a former football player with concussion issues, MAGGIE (35), Antoine’s redhead lawyer, and ALI (25), a Muslim librarian. Since Antoine died while the group was gathered, they are all suspects. The tipsy Detective explains that “locked door mysteries,” where the victim is isolated, and “closed circle mysteries,” where a limited number of suspects are trapped, are the most difficult mysteries to solve.

Everyone but Sam and Ali are drinking and celebrating Singles’ Nite, so the detective’s preliminary interviews are comically unhelpful. Antoine’s tiny office for the interviews also contains Sam’s sleeping baby girl. But throughout the night, several motives come to light. DeMarcus had accepted a bribe from Antoine to miss field goals. Dolph had loaned Antoine money with stipulations that were ignored. Sofie was his guilted lover. A lover’s triangle also existed between Sam, Gerry, and Antoine. Finding Antoine’s frozen smartphone may provide important clues after it thaws. And so might Antoine, who stuns everyone by trudging out of the kitchen. He’s alive!

As the Detective sobers up and an incomplete suicide text from Antoine is found on his thawed phone, she solves the case full of twists and turns. Gerry and Antoine orchestrated a cross between a failed suicide attempt and a sophisticated attempted murder scheme. Gerry finally makes a grand gesture to Sam, and Antoine refuses to press charges on his friend, who was only trying to help Sam. Others fall magically in love on Christmas Singles Nite, while some singles exist to carry on the tradition next year. This is not your typical predictably boring Christmas movie!

Thanks, Marcos Fizzotti. I wrote this one because I find most Christmas movies are beyond predictable. Ha!
