BURNING THROUGH PURGATORY

BURNING THROUGH PURGATORY
By Jonathan Sieff

GENRE: Thriller / Suspense, Crime
LOGLINE:

A tormented ex–getaway driver and a runaway thief collide with a ruthless queenpin after stealing her money

SYNOPSIS:

In the blistering void of a desert highway, COLE, a weathered ex–getaway driver haunted by faint echoes of screeching tires and gunfire, stops at a remote truck stop diner. His quiet meal is shattered when EAGLE, a volatile enforcer, and ROBIN, his jittery young partner, burst in and rob the place. Spotting Cole’s van outside, they force him at gunpoint to become their wheelman. As they burn rubber into the night, Cole mutters, “Guess my time in Purgatory’s finally up.”

The trio speeds toward a dusty town to lie low, but a routine stop by rookie cop LYDIA raises red flags. She lets them off with a warning, though her instincts linger. That night at the motel, a heated encounter between Eagle and Robin exposes Eagle’s dark side — and the kiss burned into his neck, which he dismisses as a birthmark.

At dawn, Eagle changes the plan. While he drives, Robin and Cole hit HAMID’s Pawnshop, overpowering him and stealing $500,000 from the safe — skimmed cash. As they flee, Hamid rasps, “You don’t know who you’re stealing from…” Lydia spots the van again, sparking a high-speed chase that ends in a brutal crash. Eagle is presumed dead. Cole grabs the money and runs. Robin, wounded, goes after him.

On the road, Cole confesses his past. His last job in Atlantic City was an ambush. The crew was massacred. As the pieces fall into place, he realizes the truth: the stolen money belongs to Vance, their shadowy crime boss — the “big bad wolf” who destroyed everything.

They roll into Fontein, a faded casino town ruled by fear. Word reaches AMBER, the ruthless owner of The Naked Kiss strip club. A scarred queenpin who breaks men and buries secrets. Once Vance’s dancer, Amber watched him murder her lover, Javier, after the Atlantic City massacre. Thirteen million dollars vanished that night. She’s waited decades for payback.

Eagle sits in a diner. Battered, but alive. He relentlessly hunts Cole and Robin. Under flickering neon, Amber unleashes a venomous monologue, revealing she branded Eagle after learning he still worked for Vance. Robin flashes back to Eagle’s abuse — and resolves to escape his grasp for good.

Amber tortures Cole, preparing to slit his throat with a hidden blade. Robin kills Eagle and fights Amber. Cole delivers a final confession — he stole Javier’s money — before twisting the blade. Amber’s neon empire dies with her.

At a roadside diner, Cole rejects the cash, urging Robin to use it for a fresh start. “Just don’t keep running,” he says. “You only get driven back in.” As Cole walks away, Robin’s phone rings…

It’s Vance. She reaches for it.
