Tiffany and Bernard are haunted by their fathers' destructive choices, but they find solace and a fighting chance at escape in an unlikely friendship that blossoms amidst the wreckage of their families.
SYNOPSIS:
Tiffany is cringed under the covers with her eyes locked on her twisted father standing by the door zipping up his pants, proud that he just finished raping his daughter. On the other side of town, Bernard is filled with hate as he works out in the basement. His mother comes downstairs trying to convince him to let go of the past because there’s nothing that can be done to change it.
The following day at school, Bernard is walking with another student in the lunchroom that’s talking bad about Tiffany, which makes Bernard take interest to find out if what the student is saying is true. When Bernard sits at her table, she’s shy at first, but she gradually opens up, and just when he’s about to ask her about the rumor, the high school bully approaches him, and because of what he says it leads to a fight.
While Bernard is in the principal's office, Tiffany comes in to express her gratitude, and Bernard leaves her with a few motivational words, along with his number. That night while Bernard and his mother talk about the fight, there’s a knock at the door. Bernard opens the door and snatches his father inside ready to fight him because of what he did to his mother, but his mother gets him to calm down and leave the room so she can speak with his father so they can finally get him out of their lives.
At Tiffany’s house, she happily writes about Bernard in her diary, and that’s when her father comes into the room prepared to attack her, but this time, she stands her ground and turns the tables, leaving him with a few words before leaving the house. While she’s at Bernard’s house, his mother gives her some uplifting words and then leaves the two alone. Bernard explains the reason why he stood up to the bully is because of what his father was doing to his mother, and Tiffany tells him the rumors about her is because of what her father was doing to her.
The next day in the afternoon, Bernard is cutting the grass when Tiffany’s father assaults him with a bat. Bernard’s mother comes out and shoots him in the leg, and then immediately checks on Bernard. Tiffany comes rushing out the house disgusted by her father’s actions, and just as Bernard’s mother stands up prepared to shoot him, Tiffany’s mother and the police pull up on the scene.
