Murder gave her a way in. Fashion, a way out.
SYNOPSIS:
In a working-class backyard, a young Latina, Synthia “Syn” Martin, conducts a fashion show. Her father brings home the head of Mexico’s Ferraro clothing cartel, and his young son, Gonzolo “Gonzy” Ferraro. When the show ends, young Gonzy pulls a rose from a bush and goes to give it to Syn. As he does, a jealous Zorro-masked child goes to attack Syn with a sword. Gonzy protects her. After, Syn wraps his bruised wrist with a scarf, and Gonzy gives her the rose, kisses her hand, then leaves. She never learns who the boy was.
Flash forward, and we find Syn now serving time in prison for murder yet even this has not stopped dream of becoming a fashion designer. When a sleazy visiting clothing company rep takes her designs as his own, she loses it, hardens, and decides she must breakout to reclaim her art and her heart. So, with her wild lesbian cellmate, ChiChi Adams, the two go to the Latina gang who, under the guidance of the Mexican cartel (now run by Gonzy), the women escape. Once in Mexico, Syn creates a couture line for Mexico to premiere at New York’s Fashion Week to go against the one stolen, and both the Mexican, and Italian, cartels assures her that the lives of those who have wronged her, will be made a living hell. The journey to the catwalk begins.
By the time the Mexican ensemble (in disguise) arrives in New York, all have encountered near tragedies, life transformations, and especially love (ChiChi finds love with Gonzy’s hard-ass sister Constance, and his ugly-duckling-to-swan daughter, Evangelina, love with guard Edwardo), but the most shocking revelation is the unmasking of the true villain behind the theft-and the murders that sent our heroine to prison as a teen - her evil twin sister, Margarite. So, with a telenovela-esque twist, the Mexican/Italian troupe orchestrate a switch. The F.B.I. swoops-in and captures Margarite as Synthia; the clothing rep is banished to a seedy badlands Mexican strip club, and as the credits role, evil Margarite is seen-forced by the Latina gang-to watch our original Syn win the Academy Award for “Best Clothing Design” and honoring of the factory workers of Mexico. Oh, and at the triple wedding? Gonzy presents Synthia a rose-designed band in the scarf she gave him years before.
