An ashamed teen girl struggles to hide her family's homelessness from friends and schoolmates.
SYNOPSIS:
ABBY STAFFORD is invited to her best friend, LAUREN’S lake house for spring break, but Abby’s unemployed father, BRIAN, feels it’s a slap in the face because Lauren’s parents are “rich.”
In her Social Evolution class, the topic of homelessness is debated making Abby feel self-conscious.
Abby and her family, camp out in a Walmart parking lot, and squat in houses which her real estate father is trying to sell.Abby convinces her father that taking MAX (her 10-year-old brother) along on the trip will give her father much more time to look for a job without having to worry about the kids.
Abby boxes up her few belongings, taking a vintage dollhouse she’s been working to restore - the only thing remaining from her childhood.
At the lake house Lauren’s cousin, Oliver Braydon “OBI” agrees to teach Max how to swim and Abby soon crushes on Obi.
JARED, nearly drowns Max while jet skiing.
When the police show up to file a complaint against Jared, Lauren's father, LYLE, tries to convince Abby's family to press charges against Jared so he'll stop bullying and harassing the other families on the lakefront property.
Abby views Lyle's push for charging Jared as a way to not confront Jared at all. She immediately wants to go home. But where is home? Walmart? A fake address that her dad gives to the police to stave off more questions?
Back at school the friendship is test once again when the senior class Shantytown project turns from homeless awareness into a glamping trip.
Abby loses her cool, outraged at her schoolmates casualness toward homelessness, and she announces she's homeless.
She's risked her scholarship because she has been giving false information about her home address to the school counselor.
With only days remaining in the school year, in what looks to be her last day at the school, Abby is fighting against her family's homelessness just as fiercely as she's fighting her growing feelings for Obi.
Will Abby be boxed in again?
