An exploration of masculinity through three interconnected perspectives - structured as a tryptic where each successive part reveals the motivations and preoccupations of a character from the previous scene.
SYNOPSIS:
:Spoilers:
A Man A Man A Man is a tryptic drama exploring themes of “masculinity.” The first story tells of a tour guide (MIKIS) in rural Greece. He picks up a hitchhiking tourist (NICCOLÒ) who we learn is a director taking a break after a difficult film shoot. The tour guide sees himself as an artist and connects with the director over the course of a day. They reveal their thoughts on the roles they play in their own lives. All the while Mikis tries to manipulate Niccolò into buying some carpets. He finally succeeds when Niccolò inexplicably buys them for way more than they’re worth.
The second story in the drama goes back in time and finds Niccolò in the middle of the difficult shoot he alluded to in the first part. He has a crush on a male actor (DARNEL) who is straight and rebuffs his advances (unfortunately timed in a bathroom). Darnel, in a fit of rage and humiliation, storms off the set, but not before pissing on a carpet the Art department had just taken from the scene they were filming.
The third story goes back in time again to explore Darnel’s life leading up to the disastrous film shoot. We find him in a doctor’s office with his wife. The doctor explains that Darnel is infertile due to a previous illness. He and his wife go to a dog shelter to get a dog, but the wife feels trapped into a family situation she doesn’t want and leaves. Darnel chooses a dog anyways and returns home to read the script of the film. The next morning Darnel's wife returns and they struggle to come to terms with their new situation. Eventually he leaves with the dog and goes to a forest. He has a gun with him and shoots the trees.
The film finishes with a coda - the father of the tour guide (ODYSSEAS) busks outside a village cafe but no one pays attention to his beautiful songs.
