PARADOX
By Holly Rivney

GENRE: Science Fiction
LOGLINE:

A shipwrecked crew find the cure for a genetic vaccine that is killing descendants of those vaccinated. The remarkable DNA of a child born to a human father and alien mother could salvage humanity from extinction but at an extortionate price.

SYNOPSIS:

Set in the year 2164. In the search for a cure to a fatal genetic mutation, two ships have been sent from Earth to explore nearby worlds in hopes of finding left chiral DNA. One of the ships crash lands on a planet with the cure, but it will be thirty months to travel the 25 light years before a ship arrives and another thirty months to return with it. In the meantime, the crew decides to integrate into the existing culture.

The captain falls in love with a native and against all of nature's rules they have a child together. Xenophobia on the planet over the child drives the family back to Earth when the opportunity arrives. Xenophobia surfaces on Earth also over the first natural hybrid of a human and off-worlder. When the DNA of the single cell animals brought from the planet doesn’t cure the epidemic, the child and her left spiraled DNA naturally combined with a human genome is what saves the population from itself. The supporting ‘players’ include space travel, a the crew of fifteen, an alien planet and its inhabitants, and the problem of genetic engineering.
