A FIRE IN THE MIND
By Ken White

GENRE: Historical
LOGLINE:

During the Great Depression, aspiring short story writer Joseph Campbell falls in love with promising novelist John Steinbeck's wife and nearly destroys his writing career.

SYNOPSIS:

Joseph Campbell, John Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts are pursuing their individual dreams – Campbell is seeking knowledge; Steinbeck is working on the great American novel; and Ricketts is trying to save Mother Earth.

Through a fateful turn of events, their lives intersect at a critical crossroads for each personally and professionally in 1932 in Monterey, California.

When Campbell falls in love with Steinbeck's wife, Carol, he threatens to destroy this close circle of friends. It’s Rick, Ilsa, Viktor, and Renault; Lancelot, Guinevere, Arthur, and Merlin with the paisanos of Monterey forming the Round Table.

Realizing their affair may derail the novelist’s career before it really starts, Campbell sacrifices his love of Carol for the love of his friend, John, who he knows is destined to become a great writer. He travels to Alaska with Ricketts, who helps him finally discover that his purpose in life is to study and re-tell the great stories that all cultures share.

This is a true story.
