By R.B. Ripley

GENRE: Western, Drama
LOGLINE:

In 1875 Colorado, a naïve, Black easterner hires a jaded Arapaho, ex-U.S. Army scout to help track down his brother's killer and deliver some vigilante justice. But as the perilous journey unfolds, it transforms a bitter quest for revenge into an unexpected bond that helps them survive the brutal journey and heal their own wounded hearts.

SYNOPSIS:

In 1875 along the Illinois/Missouri border, Titus Adams, a Black publisher from Pennsylvania, embarks on a journey to Deadwood to avenge his lover Milo, who was murdered by a man called Charles Boles. His path intersects with Ambrose Reed, an Arapaho cavalry scout who rescues Titus from certain death at the hands of Rexall, a sadistic landowner. Though initially reluctant, Ambrose agrees to guide Titus to Deadwood for a fee, beginning a tense partnership fraught with cultural differences and mutual suspicion.

As they journey northward through dangerous territory, the men face numerous threats from bushwhackers, bounty hunters, and opportunists. They gradually reveal their personal traumas to each other—Ambrose has lost his entire family and seeks only to claim land promised to him for his military service, while Titus carries the guilt of having hidden while Milo was murdered. Despite their growing attraction, their relationship fractures when Titus discovers Ambrose knows about the bounty he's placed on Boles and suspects Ambrose's motives.

Upon reaching Deadwood, Titus is devastated to learn Boles is reportedly dead, rendering his quest for vengeance futile. However, this proves to be a trap, and the men are ambushed by Boles and his gang. In the ensuing violence, Titus finally confronts and kills Boles, while Ambrose is seriously wounded. As they escape, they discover two orphaned Swedish children whose parents were murdered by the same criminals who pursued them, giving them an unexpected responsibility and purpose beyond revenge.

Four decades later in 1916 Colorado, elderly Titus and Ambrose have built a life together on Ambrose's land, raising the orphaned children who now have families of their own. Their deep bond—which Ambrose calls "woohoneyoo" or "what has been united or joined together into a whole"—has transformed their lives of isolation and vengeance into one of love and family. As they watch their descendants play before their homestead, they reflect on how fate brought them together, their hands jointly holding a book written by Titus titled "Our Hearts Were Forged in Vengeance."
