SYNOPSIS:

Lord Have Mercy!

Plot summary: After giving birth to her son out of wedlock, DEDE BRIGGS gave herself to God and renounced men altogether to become a devoted mom. But things change, sometimes radically. And when seventeen years later on a trip to L.A. her vivid connection with the Holy Spirit instructs her to marry a famous Hollywood actor, TOM WINDSOR, she hastily obeys.

Back home in Oklahoma, her son NICK and his AUNT CARLA couldn't be more aghast at the news as they've come to believe Tom is not who he says he is but rather a playboy-doctor turned wife killer hiding undercover as an FBI-agent! Nick and his two friends, MANDY and HOWIE, must quickly band together to chase after Carla who's taken off like a wild woman driving west on Interstate 40 to “intercede 'em on the road.” In a madcap convergence at a motel in Amarillo all discover the truth that the “playboy-doctor” was actually a character Tom played on a long-running soap opera, and now Nick must resign himself to the sudden prospect of finally having a dad.

Meanwhile, Tom's daughter, ALICIA, has heard the news while visiting her estranged mother in Australia. She, too, is horrified and has taken a red-eye flight from Sydney to “Joke-lahoma” in order to “assassinate” her dad for what she believes is a lunatic move on his part.

Through a series of mishaps, the new unconventional family soon settles in to reside uneasily together under one roof in Oklahoma. But when a television tabloid piece reveals the Santa Monica shotgun wedding was actually staged as part of a Just Goofin' reality show and therefore not legal, the feuding kids partner in a scheme to keep their parents from taking the vows for real.

As the kids' conspire, Dede and Tom get into quarrels over their differences, mainly their belief systems. Although Tom is very accepting of Dede's faith, he also realizes he'll have to embrace more of that “old time religion” for the marriage to work. Easier said than done since his many years living a secular life make him prone to ask a lot of questions, many of which can't be answered in “practical” terms by the faithful. These lead to a showdown with Dede's pastor, her stormy retreat, and Tom hit by a car almost dead.

At the hospital, Carla gathers her intercessory team of Bible toting prayer women; Nick blames himself for the accident due to his previous inappropriate prayers; and Alicia races to Tom's side wanting nothing more now than for her dad to live! When Tom is miraculously revived and all forgiven the stage is set for a big church wedding.

But Alicia's unconvinced by this "miracle" believing her actor-father staged it and immediately goes into hyper-drive pressuring Nick into a last ditch scheme to sabotage the wedding. Knowing of Tom's many promiscuous years, she plots with his Hollywood manager to have a dozen of his former lovers show up in protest at the ceremony. But both kids are thrown into emotional crisis when Alicia is asked by Dede to be the maid of honor and Nick is asked by Tom to be his best man. Undaunted, Alicia strong-arms Nick to remain steadfast with their dastardly plan and the final climatic elements are set in place.

In the midst of the service Nick comes to a decision of self-sacrifice that brings both conflict and reconciliation for all through a series of heartfelt events. And in the end, we're left with an unusually funny contemporary American family who must carry on together for years to come...

Blended by choice, shaken by life, stirred by the hand of God.
