STANIMELS is a comedy feature. Stan & Mel bring their puppet show west with hopes of Hollywood stardom. Instead they get taken advantage of and seduced by excess and the dark-side of business.
SYNOPSIS:
STAN and MEL, two naive brothers in their mid-twenties, are blissfully unaware of the journey they will soon take. Living in their father's basement, these two local puppeteers in Ashland, Nebraska tour their hometown to "make the world smile" - that is until their drunken father, WALTER, kicks them out. Now, with the help of their brand new puppet, MORRIS THE MONKEY, they need to get to Hollywood and claim their fame!
Once on the road they accidentally ingest some uppers, take a wrong turn into Mexico and pick up a cross-dressing bank robbing duo, SONNY and CHER, who convince them to sneak back into the United States.
After a brief encounter with a gang member upon their arrival to Hollywood, Stan and Mel settle in and work some odd jobs to make ends meet. Catering at a Bar Mitzvah, Mel accidentally poisons SHLOMOZO the clown and the brothers get a chance to perform their act for a big time public access producer, DAVID BERKOWITZ, who immediately offers them a shot.
Slowly, surely, and not without their share of misadventures, Stan and Mel turn their puppet act into a famous public access show. And now they get to greet the world with a huge live show - thongs of adoring fans vie for their attention - and, hey, why not? The brothers give up their "V Card" to two rock solid nymphettes!
Extremely popular with both children and stoned hippies, these key demographics are coveted by a big corporate network who makes a bid to buy their show from public access.
But success is a double-edged sword - in quick succession Mel is shot by a vengeful Shlomozo, David sells the show to the soulless corporation, AND their drunk father moves to Hollywood to edge in on their fame! These boys are now way in over their heads.
We see Mel slide into the fugue state of sex, drugs and rock and roll - he's a little wannabe Jim Morrison. And Stan, much, much worse - he tries to fit in as a businessman and it's killing him.
Mel quits and disappears. Stan gets fired and has a heart attack. Walter losses ALL their money. The network owns the rights to the show. And their possessions get repossessed by the IRS. What are they to do?
Why move to the Pacific Northwest and become co-op honey farmers, of course… all the while playing your old show tunes as acoustic grunge throwbacks in some Seattle coffee shop - which is exactly what Mel is doing when Stan finally finds him.
All is not lost, though; it never is, right? Turns out the one thing the network didn't steal, the music rights, have been a slow-steady revenue generating juggernaut thanks to techno remixes played in German nightclubs. The boys are rich once again, but are they all the wiser?
Family is the tie that binds - but with these guys and their cast of lost souls in need of guidance, turns out their weird little family just makes sense… and that's all that matters.
