A discredited archeologist and a skeptical reporter must find a legendary city, the clue to saving Earth from a deadly comet. ROMANCING THE STONE meets THE LOST CITY, a classic Indiana Jones style adventure.
SYNOPSIS:
In "Finding Atlantis", archaeologist SUSAN MARSHALL discovers evidence that the island really existed and that its inhabitants survived a lethal comet strike. Thousands of years ago, humans who lived on Atlantis travelled to another planet to escape an approaching comet. The comet melted the ice sheets and flooded Atlantis. As a new comet heads towards Earth, Susan races against time to uncover the secrets of how people survived, teaming up with cynical reporter RUSS MCKINLEY, called MAC. They face dangerous obstacles and villains as they search for answers in the Yucatan. Ultimately, they discover that the people of Atlantis left Earth in spaceships to colonize another planet and later returned to rebuild civilization. Armed with this knowledge, the nations of the world unite to destroy the approaching comet.
In the first scene, Atlantis is destroyed by a comet, then we switch to present day as Archaeologist Susan finds a gold bowl, which she thinks is an ancient artifact from Atlantis. Reporter Mac hears of deaths from mysterious antennas on a secret military base in Alaska. His editor doesn`t believe him and assigns him to a climate conference where he meets Susan. Susan shows slides to prove a comet hit earth thousands of years ago. After astronomers predict the arrival of another comet, Susan convinces the President that she can find the key to survival in the Yucatan, then persuades a reluctant Mac to help her, the classic odd couple pairing.
The next acts follow Susan and Mac as they search for Atlantis. General Ruckus tells the President the Alaskan antennas will find more oil, while hiding his use of them as lethal weapons. Ruckus sends men to stop Susan and Mac, who stay busy combatting snakes and grave robbers, while surviving towering waterfalls and dangerous river rapids. Ruckus and his girlfriend target London on the high tide, solar eclipse, full moon day of the comet’s arrival, causing floods and killing one of Mac’s close friends.
In the third act, Mac knocks out Ruckus, blows up the antennas, crashes a bulldozer, and is left for dead. Susan suffers in a scorching crystal cave inside a Mayan temple, but eventually discovers a gold and lapis paneled chamber filled with ancient artifacts and records. She returns to Washington and tells the President about Atlantis. He tells the story at the UN where it is decided to send the world’s nuclear weapons into space to explode the comet. Ruckus is jailed. Susan is awarded the Nobel Peace prize. Mac posthumously gets the Pulitzer. Susan places an ancient scroll in the Metropolitan Museum. Mac realizes that he has had amnesia after hitting his head on the dozer windshield. He finds Susan, kisses her, and tells her, "You’re my biggest story". A happy ending keeps them together, ready for another adventure.
